Integrated cognitive behavioral therapy for chronic pain

Abstract: Background: We aimed to examine the feasibility of our newly-developed, integrated, and high-intensity individual cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) protocol for treatment-resistant chronic pain. Methods: We conducted an open-labeled prospective single-arm trial for patients aged 18 years and above, suffering from chronic pain, and diagnosed with somatic symptom disorder with predominant pain. We provided 16 weekly sessions of CBT, each lasting for 50 minutes, which inc… Show more

“…In Kayoko Taguchi et al study [24] the effects of a CBT intervention program with attention-shift, memory work, video feedback, and image training components delivered via videoconferencing was examined. A total of thirty patients (age range, 22-75 years) with chronic pain were randomly assigned to two groups: vCBT (n=15) and TAU (n=15).…”

“…In recent years and with the development of technology, a great interest has been observed from both health providers and patients, for the effect of online CBT on chronic LBP. According to research by Taguchi Kayoko, et al [24], Thomas Rutledge, et al [38] and M Gandy, et al [39], telehealth treatments administered for chronic LBP can provide significant and relatively comparable benefits. Although the latest research believes that sms was an acceptable adjunct to iCBT for chronic pain, there is not much statistical evidence.…”

“…The present study aims to substantiate the long-term results of two of our previous studies [11,12] and to illuminate the change in patients' perspectives through qualitative research. In the single-arm trial and randomized control trial (RCT), patients who underwent our newly integrated CBT program for chronic pain exhibited statistically significant improvement with catastrophic cognition.…”

“…In these sessions, attention-shift training, memory work based on the peak-end rule, sharpening behavioral image training, and video feedback were operated in addition to Conventional CBT programs for chronic pain (including psychoeducation for pain, case formulation for understanding cognitive behavioral models of chronic pain, relaxation exercises such as breathing, and cognitive reconstruction). [11,12] The final CBT sessions for each study finished in 2018, 2019, and 2019, respectively. A total of 41 patients completed the sessions, and they were assessed to be eligible for this study.…”

“…The CBT program that we adopted is an integrated CBT program that is longer than conventional interventions and consists of several new sessions not used in traditional CBT protocols. Our developed protocol with face-to-face CBT sessions provided by the videoconference system (web-based CBT) has been shown to improve catastrophic cognition, disability, and mood [ 30 ]. Conventional CBT programs for chronic pain often comprise 8-12 intervention sessions.…”
