Growing concern about issues such as environmental quality or the sustainability of natural resources has led to the use of the Decision Support System (DSS), which originated in the business field, and is now part of environmental decision-making processes. The presence of environmental, social, or economic dimensions has helped decision support systems to evolve to be able to tackle investigations that can contemplate all these variables, such as in the case of multicriteria decision analyses. In addition, new lifestyles, in which society recognizes more and more the contribution of forests to its welfare, have led to the need to involve stakeholders in decision-making processes. This article presents a review of different Multicriteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) and participatory decision support systems applied to forest environments. This last point is presented from the perspective of stakeholder participation in the processes and from the point of view of procedures or tools used. To do this, some of the research performed in forest environments within this current century is reviewed.

Within liquid biofuels, biodiesel from nonedible feedstocks, such as Jatropha curcas , has been attracting many interests (Babazadeh, ) due to the raw materials needed for its production do not compete with human food and they can also help reverse the impact of desertification in arid regions such as North Africa, the countries of the Middle East, Australia, southwest China, the western margin of South America or southeast Spain (Corral et al, ; Fawzy and Romagnoli, ; Mirhashemi et al, ). The increasing importance of sustainability in energy production has led to a global commitment to the use of fuels derived from renewable biological sources, such as biodiesel produced from plant crops or biomass residues, that do not compete with human food for their production. For a biofuel to be considered biodiesel, it must satisfy the specifications described in the UNE 14214, with the UNE‐EN 14103 referring to the determination of fatty acid methyl ester content. This standard applies gas chromatography as an analytical technique. Gas chromatography is a widely used technique in the analysis of methyl ester although it has a number of drawbacks such as: long analysis times, a high consumption of high‐quality gases and internal standards, does not allow the analysis of different compounds with the same column, etc. From an industrial production point of view, is necessary to know the fatty acid methyl ester content in biodiesel samples quickly. This paper studies the development of an analytical method using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) as alternative to gas chromatography (GC), since it is a simple, rapid, and precise analytical technique to quantify fatty acid methyl ester content in biofuel samples.

This study aimed to delineate the most suitable areas for sustainable citrus production by integrating multi-criteria decision analysis, time-series remote sensing, and principal component analysis in a portion of the northern citrus belt of Mexico, particularly in the Rioverde Valley. Fourteen specific factors were grouped into four main factors, i.e., topography, soil, climate, and proximity to water sources, to carry out a multi-criteria decision analysis for classifying production areas according to suitability levels. To explore the effect of precipitation on land suitability for citrus production, we analyzed the historical record of annual precipitation estimated by processing 20-year NDVI daily data. The multi-criteria model was run for every precipitation year. The final map of land suitability was obtained by using the first component after principal component analysis on annual land suitability maps. The results indicate that approximately 30% of the study area is suitable for growing orange groves, with specific areas designated as suitable based on both mean annual precipitation (MAP) and principal component analysis (PCA) criteria, resulting in 84,415.7 ha and 95,485.5 ha of suitable land, respectively. The study highlighted the importance of remotely sensed data-based time-series precipitation in predicting potential land suitability for growing orange groves in semiarid lands. Our results may support decision-making processes for the effective land management of orange groves in the Mexico’s Rioverde region.
