To understand the effects of policy changes on organisations and compositions of cropping systems at regional scale and their contribution to the sustainable development of regions, we built a regional, spatially explicit, multi-scale, bioeconomic model called MOSAICA. This model explicitly incorporates information at field, farm, sub-regional and regional scale to provide cropping system mosaics by way of regional optimisation of the sum of individual farmer's utilities under field, farm and territory biophysical and socioeconomic constraints. Its generic structure means it can be used in different regions with geographic information on the location of the field and farm, data on cropping system performance, on location factors and on policy schemes. We used the model in Guadeloupe to test the impact of three scenarios of change on the agricultural subsidy regimes. The model produced three cropping system mosaics which reduced the area under banana and sugarcane, turned specialized banana and sugarcane farming systems into breeding systems while improving the overall contribution of agriculture to sustainable development. The spatially explicit results of changes in ecosystem services, and in farming systems with MOSAICA make it an appropriate decision-aid tool for regional planning. This study aimed to evaluate the replacement of soybean meal by detoxified castor bean meal on the intake and digestibility of nutrients, body weight gain, carcass yield, physiological and urinary parameters, and creep-feeding method effectiveness. For this trial, 43 male lambs were used, Dorper × Santa Inês, with an average initial body weight of 7.95 kg, 15 days old. Lambs were distributed in a randomized block design. Five experimental diets were provided: Without supplementation, with supplementation but without the use of castor bean meal, and with gradual levels of replacement of soybean meal by detoxified castor bean meal (33%, 67%, and 100%). Higher values of DMI and nutrient digestibility (p < 0.05) were observed for animals that received supplements. The milk intake did not differ among the diets. The DMD showed a linear effect, while NDFD had a quadratic effect, depending on castor bean meal inclusion. The carcass yield did not differ between experimental diets. There was no significant effect on the urinary volume and metabolites investigated. In conclusion, the replacement of soybean meal by detoxified castor bean meal does not compromise animals’ development. Besides, the creep-feeding method positively affects lamb development, with higher body weight gain for supplemented animals.

The production of biodiesel in Brazil is encouraged by the government through the Fuel Stamp, a certification system linked to the National Plan for Production and Use of Biodiesel -PNPB -aimed at promoting economic and sustainable development. It focuses on social inclusion, also intending to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and emission of pollutants and diversify the energetic matrix through the use of different oil sources as raw material. Certification -and with it a number of tax benefits -are granted to industrial processors that are supplied with raw materials coming from small-scale farms. Thus, it facilitates the access of the family farms in this value chain. The objective of this work is to analyze the effects of this system of certification in the transactions between its main agents, farmers and processing industries. For this purpose, the work makes a revision of the studies that national public agencies have elaborated on regional cases and also scientific publications. Results show that this measure allowed the insertion of family farmers in the production chain and enabled the sustainable rural development. However, it presents gaps as the occurrence of failures in the fulfilment of contracts between family farmers and the industry. Moreover, in spite of being crop diversification, one of the objectives of the certification system, the preference of the industry for soy as raw material -because of technological reasons -is displacing traditional regional crops (for example palm and castor oil).
