Manufacturing becomes increasingly complex as more variations and uncertainties are introduced to the system. Human competencies are valuable to the operation and are considered to be the most flexible manufacturing component. However, there is still lack of study on the impact of human aspects to the cellular manufacturing system performance. This article reports a case study application to evaluate the human impact in the complex cellular manufacturing system. Specifically, this work shows a systematic approach to depict and evaluate the human dynamics and attributes in measuring the labor utilization and determining the ideal man-machine configuration. The literature on modelling technologies relevant to cellular manufacturing design and change is presented to provide the rationale for the use of heuristic and enterprise modelling for this study. Evaluations on the existing human system model, CIMOSA and the heuristic mathematical model resulted in the development of an enhanced human system model framework. The newly developed model focuses on the aspects of human dynamics and attributes. To improve human work measurement data accuracy, the model also uses Maynard Operational Sequence Technique (MOST). An expert system was also developed which greatly reduced the time and effort spent on data entry and data analysis. An example using a multinational semiconductor assembly and test company is presented where 20% improvement in resource efficiency and additional machine to a labor reconfiguration was achieved without any human fallout.

Factory (re) design involves the appropriate utilisation of product, process and resource knowledge in the determination of suitable configurations of physical factory facilities which have the potential to meet industrial and organisational requirements. Different independent semantic modelling standards exist for products, processes and resources but to automate and facilitate the selection of factory resources, there is the need to semantically integrate resource capabilities with product and process requirements. This paper defines a 'recipe-based' approach to designing factories and it is based on the assumption that capabilities and competences of reusable components (or building blocks) of factory resources can be semantically modelled and matched with product-process requirements. This approach will enable Factory Designers and Engineers to decide on relevant resource systems within finite, valuable and defined sets of requirements.

In many workflow applications, actors are free to pick up work items in their work list. It is not unusual for an actor to start a work item before completing other previously accepted ones. Frequent occurrence of this behaviour implies potential patterns of work parallelism, which is useful for workflow scheduler to better dispatch ongoing work items. In this article, we apply association rule mining techniques to workflow event log to analyse various kinds of activity parallel execution patterns. When an actor accepts a new work item, the parallel execution rules mined from event log can help the workflow scheduler to find other work items that might be suitable to be undertaken by the same actor simultaneously. In the experiment on three vehicle manufacturing enterprises, we have found 32 strong rules of 40 different workflow activities. We describe our approach and report on the result of our experiment.
