Integrated Analysis of the Combined Risk of Ground Subsidence, Sea Level Rise, and Natural Hazards in Coastal and Delta River Regions

Abstract: Non-climate-related anthropogenic processes and frequently encountered natural hazards exacerbate the risk in coastal zones and megacities and amplify local vulnerability. Coastal risk is amplified by the combination of sea level rise (SLR) resulting from climate change, associated tidal evolution, and the local sinking of land resulting from anthropogenic and natural hazards. In this framework, the authors of this investigation have actively contributed to the joint European Space Agency (ESA) and the Chinese… Show more

“…These natural ecosystems not only safeguard the shoreline but also provide other ecological roles and services, including carbon storage and sequestration, biodiversity enhancement, and recreation. For example, Chongming Dongtan Wetland provides habitats and resources for diverse bird species; Paotaiwan Wetland Forest Park and Binjiang Forest Park, which are on the north coast of the mainland, provide recreational and educational opportunities for local residents [127]. However, a large number of habitats are currently under great stress of loss and degradation due to both natural and anthropogenic factors, including extensive reclamation, pollution, species invasion, coastal erosion, and sea level rise [128,129].…”
