Der Luftfrachtverkehr ist ein Segment des Verkehrsträgers Luftverkehr. Die Luftfracht unterliegt sowohl den Bedingungen des internationalen Luftverkehrs als auch den logistischen Anforderungen globaler Transportketten. Der Luftverkehr ist erst in den letzten fünf Jahrzehnten zu einem eigenen für den kommerziellen Güterverkehr relevanten Verkehrsträger aufgestiegen. Das Wachstum des geflogenen Güterverkehrs ist maßgeblich von den technologischen Weiterentwicklungen, der zunehmenden weltweiten Verschmelzung der Volkswirtschaften, dem steigenden Realeinkommen und der Liberalisierung des Luftverkehrs getrieben. Mitte der 20er Jahre beginnt die Entwicklung der zivilen Luftfahrt mit Gründung der ersten bedeutenden Luftfahrt-Gesellschaften. Mit steigender Nachfrage wachsen in der Folge sowohl die Kapazität als auch die Reichweite der Flugzeuge. Und mit zunehmenden Bedenken und Restriktionen verbessert sich auch deren Umweltverträglichkeit. Die aktuelle Bedeutung des Luftfrachtverkehrs ist dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass im Gegensatz zur Anfangszeit, in der die Beförderung besonders hochwertiger Fracht und die Erzielung eines schnellen Transports (Ausnahmecharakter) im Fokus stand, heute die regelmäßige Beförderung einer breiten Palette von Gütern zu verzeichnen ist. Mit neuen Flugzeugmustern und dem wachsenden Aufkommen entwickelt sich die Luftfracht vom Notfallprodukt zu einem regelmäßigen Frachtprodukt, das in Abhängigkeit von Transportstrecke und Art der Güter in direkter Konkurrenz mit anderen Verkehrsträgern steht. Im interkontinentalen Güterverkehr konkurriert das Flugzeug mit dem Seeschiff, im kontinentalen Verkehr mit dem Lkw und der Bahn. Der Luftfrachttransport nimmt innerhalb der Transportketten des globalen Warenaustausches von Industrie und Handel
