INTEGRAL operations beyond the design lifetime - Challenges of running an 11 year old mission

Abstract: However, major challenges this "old" mission faces are the aging on-board systems, the ongoing evolution of ground-segment technology, manpower turnover and a tightening budget. This paper summarises the effects of aging of the INTEGRAL spacecraft components and its ground segment in times of austerity as well as their impact on operations, team structure, costs and scientific programme execution. Furthermore, it discusses how to retain expertise and interest and illustrates the potential of extending INTEGRAL… Show more

“…Currently, besides fuel the only life limiting element for INTEGRAL is power [10] . It is likely that by the mid 2020ies because of degrading power margins the solar aspect angle will have to be (initially just seasonally) limited to maintain a positive power margin.…”

“…Fuel and the solar arrays are the two obvious life-limiting components on INTEGRAL [10] . Since the flexibility design of the main bus regulation unit allows ESA to utilise INTEGRAL's power budget in a more flexible way than originally foreseen by industry [11] and since the instruments are still in very good order, currently, the lifetime limiting element is probably propellant (or money).…”
