Rock cuttability is expressed by specific energy (SE) that is defined as the energy required for cutting unit volume of rock. Direct determination of SE requires a rock cutting rig and is expensive and time-consuming. Therefore, empirical models have been alternative methods for predicting SE from rock properties. Two different predictive models of SE have been developed in this study using regression tree and artificial neural network (ANN) methods. Both empirical models employed the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and Mode I fracture toughness (KIC), being derived from tensile strength (t), as predictors. Data from four different studies have been used to develop the models. Statistical analyses on the data set have shown that both UCS and KIC are closely related to SE in a nonlinear form. Numerical and graphical measures of the goodness of the fit and ANOVA test have shown that regression tree and ANN models have performed similarly.

A damage constitutive model was established to evaluate the stability of jointed rock masses around the underground caverns of Shuangjiangkou Hydropower Station. In this model, a second-order damage tensor was formulated to describe the initial geometric imperfection of jointed rock masses. A failure criterion for crack coalescence and a damage evolution equation were proposed by considering the secondary cracks induced by excavations according to the fracture mechanics principles. A subprogram under the framework of FLAC-3D was developed for the damage constitutive model and the damage evolution equation. The model and program were then applied in the stability assessment for the Shuangjiangkou underground cavern group.

Cores were taken from the hanging wall of the III -1 ore body at Kangjiawan Lead, Zinc and Gold Mine. 50 samples for compression and tension tests were fabricated. 50 compressive and 50 tensile strength values were obtained by RMT-150B testing systems. The probability distributions for the compressive and tensile strength were tested by the hypothesis test method. It proves that uniaxial compressive strength follows normal distribution and tensile strength follows the lognormal distribution. And it proves that elastic modulus and Poson’s ratio follow normal distribution. 50 pairs of cohesion and internal friction angle were obtained by randomly drawing a uniaxial compressive and tensile strength samples from 50 measured values. Cohesion follows lognormal distribution and internal friction angle follows normal distribution through hypothesis test method. With the results, some references can be conveniently provided for prediction of the strength and distribution of similar rocks in related geotechnical projects.
