Insulin Resistance in Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Syndrome

Abstract

ÖZETAmaç: Çalışmada Obstruktif Uyku Apne Sendromu (OUAS) ile insülin direnci (İD) arasındaki ilişki ve İD'nin etkilendiği faktörleri araştırmak hedeflendi. ABSTRACTAim: In this study, we aimed to determine the association between obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) and insulin resistance (IR) along with related factors.Materials and Methods: Polysomnography was performed from September to January 2008. According to the apnoea hypopnea index (AHI) ≥ 5 that were mild, moderate and severe, giving a total of 60 patients in the OSAS group; 25 patients with AHI <5 were included as the control group. Fasting blood glucose, as well as the total lipid and insulin levels were determined. IR was calculated using the homeostasis model of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) measurement model. Results:The OSAS group showed the following levels: mean fasting glucose 94.9±10.2 mg/dL, insulin level 11.0±6.6U/L, HOMA-IR score 2.6±1.7, total cholesterol 223.3±45.0 and LDL cholesterol 146.3±37.0. Fasting insulin levels, HOMA-IR, total and LDL cholesterol levels were higher in the OSAS group than in the control group. Conclusion:In this study, when we evaluated the factors affecting IR, it was determined that the effects of AHI>15 and neck circumference measurements were significantly higher (p=0.030 odds 3.01; p=0.014 odds 3.98 respectively). In patients with OSAS, the existence of IR was shown to be independent from the common obesity and waist circumference measurements.Keywords: Sleep apnoea, insulin resistance, obesity
