Insulin‐Like Growth Factor‐I in Human Malnutrition: Relationship with Some Body Composition and Nutritional Parameters

Abstract: The insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) plasma concentration was evaluated as a nutritional parameter in 18 patients affected with chronic malnutrition secondary to biliopancreatic bypass and compared with albumin, transferrin, and with body composition parameters: total body water (TBW), total body sodium (TBNa), total body potassium (TBK). Subjects were studied in malnutritional conditions and after 20 to 30 days of parenteral and enteral refeeding treatment. Immunoreactive IGF-I concentration was 0.35 U/ml… Show more

“…The anabolic mediator IGF-I has been suggested as a biochemical indicator of nutritional status (Estivariz & Ziegler, 1997;Minuto et al, 1989). However, in this set of patients serum IGF-I did not correlate to other nutritional variables.…”

“…IGF-1 correlated with each ( P < 0.02) and levels rose in six patients who were provided with nutritional support. IGF-1 has been evaluated as a nutritional index by comparing plasma concentrations with albumin, transferrin and body composition variables (total body water, total body Na and total body K) in eighteen patients who were malnourished following bilio-pancreatic bypass (Minuto, 1989). These patients were not suffering from any inflammatory response or tumour activity, and so low concentrations of IGF-1 were attributed to malnutrition alone.…”
