Insulin-Like Growth Factor-Binding Proteins of Teleost Fishes

Abstract: The insulin-like growth factor (Igf) binding protein (Igfbp) family has a broad range of physiological functions and a fascinating evolutionary history. This review focuses on the Igfbps of teleost fishes, where genome duplication events have diversified gene repertoire, function, and physiological regulation—with six core Igfbps expanded into a family of over twenty genes in some lineages. In addition to briefly summarizing the current state of knowledge on teleost Igfbp evolution, function, and expression-le… Show more

“…Similar responses were detected in some species 41,42 ; but not in others 35,43,44 , although such a decrease is analogous to the Igfbp3 plasma levels determined in fasted coho and chinook salmon [45][46][47] , suggesting a similar response of these two igfbps to long term food deprivation in different fish species. Thus, Igfbps in teleost are differently affected by the various metabolic conditions 42 and in the case of gilthead sea bream muscle, igfbp5b seems to be the most sensitive form to food availability. Moreover, ghrs expression showed in this study a dual role, with the decrease of ghr1 until 5 h refeeding and a partial increase at 24 h and 7 days refeeding and the increase of ghr2 expression up to 24 h refeeding.…”

“…); for some gene families, the retention rate of Ss4R gene duplicates is 100% (e.g. Garcia de la Serrana & Macqueen ). Additionally, one in five salmon genes belongs to a pair of more ancient gene duplicates retained from Ts3R, leading to highly expanded gene families compared to most non‐teleost vertebrates.…”

“…IGFBP-1 sub-types inhibit IGF signalling by sequestering IGFs in the extracellular environment and are major carriers of circulating IGF (Shimizu and Dickhoff, 2017). While their autocrine roles in teleost muscle are poorly understood, IGFBP-1A subtypes are thought to have evolved local functions, and are upregulated by catabolic signals in muscle (Garcia de la serrana and Macqueen, 2018). The upregulation of IGFBP-1A genes in WT fish to a level higher than TR and TF should therefore restrict IGF signalling and hence growth upon immune stimulation, whereas downregulation in GH transgenic fish should increase IGF availability to IGF1R.…”

“…IGFBP-6B1 and -6B2 for Poly I:C in TR and TR). IGFBP-6 subtypes are considered negative regulators of growth (Garcia de la serrana and Macqueen, 2018) and are known to be induced by pro-inflammatory signals in Atlantic salmon muscle (Pooley et al, 2013). The reciprocal regulation of many IGFBPs during immune stimulation in TR and TF versus WT fish implies disruption in normal molecular cross-talk between growth and immunity owing to GH and its ability to impact growth rate and nutritional status.…”
