Insula network connectivity mediates the association between childhood maltreatment and depressive symptoms in major depressive disorder patients

Abstract: Childhood maltreatment (CM) is a major risk factor for developing the major depressive disorder (MDD), however, the neurobiological mechanism linking CM and MDD remains unclear. We recruited 34 healthy controls (HCs) and 44 MDD patients to complete the childhood maltreatment experience assessment with Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) and resting-state fMRI scan. Multivariate linear regression analysis was employed to identify the main effects of CM and depressive symptoms total and subfactors scores on bil… Show more

“…Являясь важным центром паралимбической системы, островок анатомически связан с широким спектром корковых, лимбических и паралимбических структур [14] и функционально участвует в процессах познания высокого порядка, эмоциональных реакциях и эмпатии [15]. Данные нейровизуализационных исследований показали, что дисфункция островка в значительной степени способствует изменению функциональных возможностей пациентов с депрессией [16,17].…”

“…Therefore, emerging research has begun to investigate the vulnerabilities that characterize this subgroup and potentially explain their more severe and retractable illness course (Vallati et al, 2020). Much of this research has focused on neurobiological markers suggesting that sensitization of the neuroendocrine stress response (Heim et al, 2008), hippocampal atrophy (Opel et al, 2014), and alterations of insula connectivity (He et al, 2022) may contribute to the onset and exacerbation of MDD in maltreatment‐exposed individuals. Other research has sought to identify emotional and behavioural vulnerabilities that characterize this MDD subgroup.…”

“…Although the evidence for a comorbidity between obesity and AUD is con icting 10 , the clinical relationship between these two disorders is complex and both are affected by common aspects of vulnerability to adverse events, as well as subsequent events whereby excess alcohol consumption can lead to both weight gain and to weight loss 7,11,12 . Previous studies have shown that ELS is associated alterations in brain structure and function, including reduced centrality (de ned as the impact of a particular region of the brain on the transmission and exchange of information within extensive networks of the brain) in SN regions, such as the anterior insula (AIns) and dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) [13][14][15] .…”
