Instruments to assess quality of life in people with mental health problems: a systematic review and dimension analysis of generic, domain- and disease-specific instruments

Abstract: Objectives The importance of economic evaluations of mental healthcare interventions is increasingly recognized. Despite the multitude of available quality of life instruments, concerns have been raised regarding the content validity of these instruments, and hence suitability for use in mental health. The aim of this paper, therefore, was to assess the content validity and the suitability of existing quality of life instruments for use in economic evaluations in mental health problems. … Show more

“…The importance in doing so may be emphasised by the fact that sound and concise instruments, capable of adequately capturing important life domains impacted by mental health problems, are currently lacking [ 26 ]. Instruments like the MHQoL, therefore, can facilitate broadening the application of HTA to the field of mental health in a way that the benefits of mental health interventions are indeed captured.…”

“…While there is evidence that these issues may be valid in depression, concordance between generic HRQoL measures and clinical measures has been shown to reduce with severity ( 109 ). Partly in response to these concerns, there has been increased focus on measurement of wellbeing and quality of life in mental health ( 110 ), but to date, there exists no mental health domain-specific preference-based measure that has been sufficiently validated that it can be recommended as an alternative to the EQ-5D or the SF-6D. In the absence of such a measure, the quality of the evidence used to inform EQ-5D generated utility data is of particular importance, and extensive sensitivity testing of utility values is imperative.…”

“…The fact that existing quality of life measurements fall short of accurately capturing comprehensive output and the value of benefits of mental healthcare interventions.. 24 A multidimensional psychometric measurement is very essential to ensure that the tools utilized are comprehensive and psychometrically sound to properly quantify and value these benefits of QOL. In literature variety of instruments in existence to measure QOL, in which some investigators, particularly apply a single domain while other investigators tap into a series of domains.…”
