Instrumentation Requirements for Kick Detection in Deep Water

Abstract: In deepwater drilling, increased emphasis must be placed on early kick detection. Using a recently developed computer program to model kicking wells, various types of kick detection instruments were evaluated to determine which are most useful and what sensitivities are desirable. Kick detection based on return-mud flow rate was found most beneficial. Introduction In offshore drilling operations, increasing water depth reduces the difference between the mud w… Show more

“…The circulating conditions during the experiment also enabled a faster rise rate. Previous experimental work [24,25] on a 12 m 7.8 in. ID tubing resulted in maximum gas velocities of only 0.2 ft/s.…”

“…(Caenn et al, 2011) One way of maintaining the stability of bottom-hole pressure is by monitoring and regulating the drilling fluid flow rate. An early indication of wellbore instability can be detected using delta flow method, which is based on the difference between inflow and outflow measurements of drilling fluid while circulating the fluid, (Maus et al, 1979;Schafer et al, 1992;Lloyd et al, 1990). Therefore, it is important to measure inflow and outflow of drilling fluid accurately.…”

“…Therefore, the aim is to accurately determine the delta flow in the circulation loop. There are different types of flow measurement systems for delta flow measurement in the literature [7][8][9][10][11]. To point out some of them, the conventional pump strokes counter, rotatory pump speed counter and Coriolis mass flowmeter can be used for inflow measurement and the standard paddle meter, ultrasonic level meter, a prototype rolling float meter and open channel Venturi flow meter can be used for outflow measurements.…”

“…Maus L.D. et al [9] pointed out that the incremental monitoring of the mud pit can be used as a parameter for gas invasion monitoring. The mud pit increment is the result of integrating the difference between inflow and outflow rates over time.…”
