Instrumentation Design and Upgrade for Principal Components Analysis Monitoring

Abstract: In this paper, a methodology to design instrument networks optimally selected for the use of PCA-based monitoring in process plants is presented. Sensors are placed or signals are selected to minimize the sum of investment cost and the cost of not detecting a fault. This optimization problem is solved using Genetic Algorithms (GA). It is shown that for existing sensor networks, the use of fewer signals than the available ones can be, in some cases, advantageous for monitoring purposes.

“…Following this analysis, the efficiency and controllability of the system in two operating points for a determined net power is studied in [40]: one point corresponding to the minimum current necessary to obtain the required power and the other with a greater current. A conflict between controllability and efficiency was found.…”

“…Many authors have studied the modeling approach based on equivalent electrical circuits, consisting of an arrangement of different electrical components to have the same frequency response as that obtained by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests [37][38][39][40]. Some works present equivalent circuits using electrical elements, such as resistances, capacitances or inductance.…”

“…Another related context is the design of sensor networks and optimal sensor placement. The main objective here is to select the locations for sensors so as to achieve maximum estimation accuracy [3], or minimum capital cost [4], or both [5], or to maximize the fault detection performance [6]. This paper focuses on the context of PCA based process monitoring.…”
