Instrumental activities of daily living are impaired in Parkinson’s disease patients with mild cognitive impairment.

Abstract: Performance-based measures of IADLs, particularly medication management ability, are sensitive to subtle functional declines in PD-MCI. Although impairment in performance-based measures is associated with cognitive status in PD, IADLs may be a separate domain of functioning from cognitive functioning in PD-MCI as these measures did not correlate with performance on the neuropsychological measures. Overall, performance-based assessment of IADLs may add to the clinical evaluation of PD-MCI.

“…Although it is well known that PPD results in a functional decline, our findings confirm investigations on IADLs impairment also in PD-MCI (Pirogovsky et al 2014) and the importance to add measures of day-today functioning in the clinical evaluation of this category of patients.…”

“…Functional autonomy . A total of 4 studies explored functional autonomy in patients with PD‐MCI, but none found any relationship between the 2 parameters (Supplementary Material 6). Our meta‐analysis showed no significant differences between patients with and without PD‐MCI on tools assessing functional autonomy (ES = −0.18, P = 0.144; Table ).…”

“…Cognitive deficits in PD patients with mild cognitive impairment (PD-MCI) impact the ability to perform instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs) [3,4], and impairments in PD dementia (PDD) have profound functional consequences [57]. Cognitive impairment in PD is a target of therapeutic interventions, and treatment benefits should reflect improvement in cognition and function, as required by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for new Alzheimer’s disease (AD) treatments [8].…”
