In the last few years, the study of the seismic fragility of existing Reinforced Concrete (RC) buildings has been the object of a wide interest within the scientific community, especially after the experiences provided by recent hazardous events, which have shown the vulnerability of the existing RC building stock. The recent studies about this topic have shown that the probabilistic approach of Performance Based Earthquake Engineering (PBEE) is the most suitable methodology for taking into account the different sources of uncertainty in fragility analysis, considering both the nature of the seismic demand and the problems related to the incomplete knowledge. For an accurate probabilistic seismic fragility estimation, a fundamental aspect is to consider the contribution of all the elements that constitute the building system, such as the secondary structural (floor system) and non-structural elements (infill panels). In this paper, the focus is aimed on the investigation of the role of secondary and non-structural elements in the evaluation of fragility curves of existing RC buildings. In particular, a real case study, representative of the typical existing school buildings of the Southern Italy, is analysed and discussed.

This paper presents a methodology for the seismic vulnerability assessment of current buildings, suitable for the study of historical centres at the regional scale. The applicability is demonstrated with reference to four case studies: the historical centre of the city of Foggia (Italy) and three other small towns of this province, for a total of 4519 housing units. Field data were collected by several teams of technicians by means of a survey form, provided in electronic format. The subsequent data processing and drawing of vulnerability maps was performed using GIS. The collected data were used also for the validation of the algorithm, by comparing the results with those of the GNDT methodology, which is widely adopted in Italy. The results of the research study and the application showed some critical points, related to the poor nature of the information collected and to the reliability of the final results. These issues are analysed and discussed, proposing a strategy for improving the methodology.

In assessing the safety of existing buildings, the specific actions dedicated to the knowledge of the structure delineate the parameters of the linear or non-linear analysis aimed at identifying the most appropriate structural intervention. In this context, the present paper collects the seismic analysis of a school building in reinforced concrete, illustrating the different stages concerning the acquisition of geometrical and mechanical data, problems about structural modelling and the features of the seismic retrofitting proposed. In closing, a critical comparison between the results derived from some techniques frequently used to seismically improve existing structures
