Instructional Design Competencies for Online High School Teachers Modifying their own Courses

Abstract: This study identifies competencies specific and beneficial to online high school teachers that are modifying their own courses. Existing instructional design standards, available to guide online teachers, are not only too numerous, they are also inconsistent. Moreover, a lack of clarity exists about which specific standards benefit this emerging professional group in the process of developing and revising their courses. The Delphi design enabled participants in related fields and separated by physical distance… Show more

“…Researchers have utilized multiple approaches to identify competencies for instructional designers. These multiple methods include the Delphi method, job announcement analysis, survey-based research, in-depth interviews and a multimethod approach (Irby & Strong, 2015;Kang & Ritzhaupt, 2015;Klein & Kelly, 2018;Ritzhaupt et al, 2010Ritzhaupt et al, , 2018Ritzhaupt & Kumar, 2015;Rozitis, 2017;Sugar et al, 2007;Van Rooij, 2013). These approaches and methodologies provide different toolkits for researchers to examine instructional design professional competencies from different perspectives.…”

“…However, despite their increase in popularity and their potential benefits, there is still a lack of best-practices data, and there is limited amount of research related to teaching and learning in virtual schools (Dipietro, 2010;Toppin & Toppin, 2015). Therefore, learner success within virtual schools is largely dependent on the teacher's ability to plan, implement and assess their online teaching and courses (Rozitis, 2017;Toppin & Toppin, 2015). This state of affairs has led scholars to suggest that good virtual schooling should be driven by sound instructional approaches (Moller et al, 2012).…”
