The paper proposes a conceptual framework for studying Russian innovation system through the lens of a narrative economics approach. Applied narrative analysis involves five stages: 1) defining the range of influential media sources; 2) highlighting relevant narratives; 3) measuring the virality of narratives and revealing their connection to certain rules and institutions; 4) identifying problem situations related to key research issues; 5) assessing the influence of narratives, ideas, rules and institutions on the problem situations. We conducted a literature review relying on the co-occurrence method, and compiled mental maps to identify three domains associated with narrative economics: financial markets; the institutional environment of economy; science and education. The narratives are proposed to be classified as a) the sources of qualitative data on certain behavioral patterns, and b) simplified models related to particular scholar traditions. The research findings show six key issues featuring Russian innovation system: public administration of innovation activities; the selection of research areas; demand-based innovation; institutional structure and competitive environment; personnel for research and innovation; human resources in research and development; intellectual property. We distinguish between two approaches that complement formal modeling. Within the ex ante approach, narrative analysis precedes modeling, allowing to make related assumptions. Ex post approach deals with the conclusions resulted from a particular model application. Relying on the research findings, we use relevant narratives to supplement the explanatory hypotheses and interpret the problem situation.

Sustainable social and economic processes of the recent decades are characterized by the emergence of new phenomenon known as precarity and its new accompanying class known as the precariat. The precariat as a social class or social community is primarily associated with a factor of instability and insecurity of workers with flexible employment. This paper studies the precarity on the labor market for the socially-oriented professions in the three Russian metropolitan areas: Moscow, Kazan, and Rostov-on-Don. The paper searches for the causes of precarity of socially-oriented professions based upon the analysis of economic processes in the public sector, and of the reformers' rhetoric and its reflection in the discourses of the main actors about the goals and direction of the reforms. Sociallyoriented professions are associated with the creation of benefits, which are very little associated with markets and in most cases belong to public or mixed goods. Our findings suggest that the reforms of Russian education and healthcare spheres are accompanied by large-scale institutional changes which resulted in bureaucratization, orientation toward achieving performance indicators not related to professional values, stagnation of incomes, inequality between regions, and instability of professional trajectories. We conclude that reducing the prestige of socially-oriented professions, the material well-being, along with instability, become the main factors of precarity.

Globalization of the economies has long been hailed as an apparatus that generates and maintains a level-playing field for both genders. It is argued that freer the markets become, the higher will be the opportunities for women to be empowered. Therefore, women will be more enlightened economically and will gain agency. As various forms of violence against women do not show any sign of decline, this article asks a fundamental question about the role of globalization. We examine whether the forces of globalization inadvertently play the role of an ally in the rise of violence against women. This article focuses on an extreme form of gender violence, namely, female foeticide, in India to show how the access to cheap technology may enhance such violence. JEL: J16, F60, F69
