China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) invests billion in Pakistan’s energy, infrastructure, and other development projects to step toward Eurasia’s economic integration. However, CPEC may exacerbate climate change vulnerabilities for Pakistan’s struggling economy due to potential environmental hazards and consequences. In this context, the current study seeks to examine the impact of political risk on carbon emissions and economic growth in Pakistan while also considering the relevance of trade openness, Chinese outward Foreign Direct Investment , and One Belt One Road policy. To investigate this impact, we use the autoregressive distributed lag technique to cointegration and the fully modified ordinary least squares estimator for robustness results, using data spanning . Our empirical findings reveal that trade openness, FDI, and OBOR policy contribute to pollution and economic growth, but political stability slows the rate of environmental deterioration and increases economic growth. Furthermore, the existence of robust political stability mitigates the negative impacts of FDI and trade openness on the environment, while strong political stability aids the positive effects of FDI and trade openness on economic growth. Also, the findings confirmed that a better political environment promotes economic development while simultaneously lowering carbon emissions. Our results may assist the Government of Pakistan in transforming into a model green initiative in the region.

The rule of law and control of corruption would play an effective role in managing CO2 emissions in Pakistan. The present research has explored this issue in Pakistan controlling economic growth during 1996-2019. Further, the unit root and cointegration tests are used. We found the long and short-run relationships in the model. Economic growth has a positive effect on CO2 emissions. The rule of law could not impact in the long run and negatively impacts in the short run. Hence, improving law and order conditions would reduce CO2 emissions in the short run, and further improvements in the rule of law could have pleasant long-run environmental effects. The control of corruption has a positive impact on CO2 emissions in the long run. However, the short-run effects of control of corruption with first and second lags are found negative.

Significant challenges confronting China include reducing carbon emissions, dealing with the resulting problems, and meeting various requirements for long-term economic growth. As a result, the shift in industrial structure best reflects how human society utilizes resources and impacts the environment. To meet China's 2050 net-zero emissions target, we look at how technological innovations, financial development, renewable energy investment, population age, and the economic complexity index all play a role in environmental sustainability in China. Analyzing short- and long-term relationships using ARDL bounds testing, we used historical data spanning 1990–2018. According to the study's findings, the cointegration between CO2 emissions and their underlying factors was found. The deterioration of the environment directly results from financial development, increasing economic complexity, and population aging. Technical advancements, investments in renewable energy sources, and changes to the industrial structure all contribute to lower CO2 emissions. Granger causality results were also reliably obtained in this study. According to our findings in the fight against environmental problems, a key tool for meeting long-term sustainability goals is policy prescriptions that use technological innovations, renewable energy investment, and industrial structure.
