Institutional entrepreneurship and permaculture: A practice theory perspective

Abstract: Permaculture is a growing but little researched phenomenon emphasising care for the environment, equity, fair treatment of people and working with—and not against—nature. It thus represents a potential alternative to business as usual, capable of addressing fundamental challenges posed by human‐made climate change. The paper examines a previously ignored site of entrepreneurship by taking a practice perspective, exploring connections between the practice and growth of permaculture and institutional entrepreneu… Show more

“…The embodiment of both environmental and social values (De Giacomo & Bleischwitz, 2020) is a key characteristic of many of the participant organizations. Indeed, in some specific environmental fields, such as permaculture, care for the environment, and the equity and fair treatment of people working with it, is directly linked (Genus et al, 2021). This study highlights the critical role that broader societal values play in binding environmental organizations together in collective endeavour and in underpinning purpose‐driven organizations at a deeper level encompassing both nature and people:
I want to be remembered for making a positive impact on wildlife worldwide … not just helping animals … but also people … it's all linked together, it cannot be separated.

“…The fundamental challenges humanity is currently facing, with the environmental crisis arguably being one of the most (de‐)pressing, have ignited interest in the role of entrepreneurship in relation to environmental challenges (Belz & Binder, 2017; Genus et al, 2021; Muñoz & Cohen, 2017; Shepherd & Patzelt, 2011). Entrepreneurial action is attested transformative potential, driving the much needed transition toward a more sustainable economy and society (Gibbs & O'Neill, 2014; Riedy, 2021).…”

“…In addition, we discuss the role of materiality and nonhuman agency in the presented model and offer novel insights for environmental value creation and the strategic agency of entrepreneurial actors. By providing a novel framework of valuation, we contribute to the development of sustainable entrepreneurship from a practice perspective and as social change (Dey & Mason, 2018; Genus et al, 2021; Holm & Beyes, 2022). The article concludes by considering the limitations of the study and indicating fertile avenues for future research.…”

“…We achieved these two objectives through the literature review results by highlighting the constraints imposed on existing methods and evaluating alternatives using the practice theory perspective. Practice theory acknowledges the contextual construction of occupational practices (Genus et al, 2021).…”

“…Given their literature review results, the question worth asking is to what extent can data collection procedures used in practice theory be integrated to address research on BRPs' PAF? Schweizer and Nienhaus (2017) and Genus et al (2021) questioned the validity of the findings of the studies based on unitary (one party) data collection procedures.…”
