Instantaneous Identification of Polynomial Nonlinearity Based on Volterra Series Representation

Abstract: In structural engineering applications a sufficient quantity of experimental data to be able to achieve a consistent estimate of nonlinear quantities is seldom available: this applies in particular when the structures are to be tested in situ. This report discusses the definition of instantaneous estimators to be used in the dynamic identification of invariant nonlinear systems on the basis of Short-Time Fourier Transform representation of excitation and system’s response and within the framework of a Volterra… Show more

“…be the vector of parameters which describes the dynamic properties of the system and let us introduce an instantaneous objective function [11,12]: [13], at discrete time instant ∆ * n t and frequency ∆ m f , respectively measured and calculated by integrating Eq. 7, for a given configuration of parameters p. The number of frequency samples, M, to be considered in the objective function in Eq.…”

“…Both original tows were thoroughly specified in their respective data sheets with regards to fiber number and diameter, density and Young modulus, but not for damping. The analysis of the three families of resonance profiles allows for the extraction of Young modulus, E, quality factor, Q, and the non-linear coefficient χ of all three fibers [21,22,23,24]. The first quantity is the most uncertain in the prototype apparatus, due to the uncertainty in actual number and diameter of the fibers and because of the difficulty to accurately calibrate the vertical displacement sensor.…”

“…be the vector of parameters which describes the dynamic properties of the system and let us introduce an instantaneous objective function [11,12]: If the time-dependent spectrum satisfies the time marginal property [13], then F ob gives the difference between the instantaneous energies of the experimental signals and those of the system output corresponding to a given configuration of the unknown parameters p: by resorting to classical optimisation procedures, it proves possible to determine instant by instant the minimum of ( ) * ob F n ,p , through which the vector of the instantaneous estimators p(t) of the dynamic properties can be defined.…”
