Instant modification of graphite nanosheets by the grafting of a styrene oligomer under microwave radiation

Abstract: Instant grafting polymerization of styrene initiated by microwave radiation on the surface of graphite nanosheets (GNs) was carried out. The stability of the modified GN dispersions in different solvents indicated significant changes in the surface properties of GNs. In comparison with GNs without modification, the modified GNs showed more stable suspensions in a nonpolar organic solvent such as toluene and were more likely to form a precipitate when dispersed in distilled water, a polar solvent. “…In the literature, the reduction in the number of stacked layers in GNP is attempted through a variety of techniques, namely, intercalation, oxidization, heat treatment, microwave irradiation, and ultrasonic treatment. [21][22][23][24] A wide range of applications is envisaged for GNP, from sensors 25 and electromechanical resonators 26 to adsorbents. [27][28][29] GNP deserve increasing interest also as filler for polymers, 30 and reviews are already available on processing 18 and mechanical and electrical properties 31 of the ensuing polymer nanocomposites.…”

“…20 Conventional heating processes involve the heat been concentrated along the materials surface rather than the interior, microwave energy is, however, absorbed by the material and converted to heat. 21 In this regard, the use of microwave irradiation on natural fibre is gaining substantial attention and has been reported by researchers. Xue and Xin reported in their study of microwave irradiated wool fabric, that microwave heating is more efficient than conventional heating.…”

“…The grafting of polystyrene (PS) onto expanded graphite (EG), with cationic initiation and ethylene oxide onto particles were reported by Wang and Pan (16,17). Tsubokawa et al reported the grafting of PMMA and PS onto GN surface by anionic polymerization and modified graphite with n-butyl lithium (18).…”
