Instabilities and failure in elongational flow and melt spinning of fibers

Abstract: SynopsisA theoretical and experimental study of instability and failure behavior during melt spinning is presented. From an analysis of system dynamics, draw resonance is shown to be a continuous processing analogue of ductile failure. Using viscoelastic fluid mechanics and the White-Metzner constitutive model, it is shown that melts which exhibit ductile failure in elongational flow tend to show draw resonance in melt spinning. Deformation hardening melts exhibit cohesive fracture in elongational flow and mel… Show more

“…As seen in the photographs in Figs. 4 and 5, the thread exhibits a two-step breakup mechanism, ductile failure and capillarity failure, similar to the phenomena observed in melt-spinning processing (20,21). First, the PS thread is greatly elongated to form a neck.…”

“…Attempts were then made to analyze the process with differential constitutive models. Denn et al performed 4 an analysis with the upper-convected Maxwell (UCM) model, while White and Ide made use of 5 the White-Metzner model. Fisher and Denn ex- 6 tended the analysis with the UCM model to include non-isothermal effects.…”
