-High voltage insulators are widely deployed in power systems to isolate the live-and dead-part of overhead lines as well as to support the power line conductors mechanically. Permanent, secure and safe operation of power transmission lines require that the high voltage insulators are inspected and monitor, regularly. Severe environment conditions will influence insulator surface and change creepage distance. Consequently, power utilities and transmission companies face significant problem in operation due to insulator damage or contamination. In this study, a new technique is developed for real-time inspection of insulator and estimating the snow, ice and water over the insulator surface which can be a potential risk of operation breakdown. To examine the proposed system, practical experiment is conducted using ceramic insulator for capturing the images with snow, ice and wet surface conditions. Gabor and Standard deviation filters are utilized for image feature extraction. The best achieved recognition accuracy rate was 87% using statistical approach the Standard deviation.

Abstract:As a non-contact discharge detection method, ultraviolet (UV) imaging can rapidly, directly, and securely detect corona discharges. Therefore, UV imaging has been widely applied to power systems. To study the influences of different factors on UV corona discharge detection, two typical types of UV imagers (DayCor ® Superb and CoroCAM ® 6D) were utilized. Results show that the observation angle has little impact on UV detection if no obstacles block the detection line of sight. Given that different UV imagers have different optimal imager gains, photon numbers under different gains could be calibrated to the values under optimal gains in accordance with the gain correction formula. Photon numbers decrease with the increase in the square of observation distance. Detection results under different observation distances could be corrected to the contrast distance after the detection of electrical equipment. The photon numbers of different UV imager types could be corrected in accordance with the instrumental correction factor. The results of this study can provide references to improve the applications and standardizations of UV imaging technology in corona discharge detection.

Online monitoring of the contamination condition of power transmission line is important to prevent insulation from flashover. The conventional online monitoring methods are easily disturbed by the strong electromagnetic interference around the high voltage line. In this letter, Bragg wavelength of polyimide coated fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is found to be slightly restrained by the salt deposited on the polyimide surface. Based on the effect, a special designed FBG sensor is proposed for detecting equivalent salt deposit density (ESDD) on insulators of power transmission line. To improve the sensor sensitivity, multiple polyimide layers are coated on the naked FBG, and in the curing process a 0.15-N force is applied on the free end of FBG to form uniform layers. Experiment results show the restrain wavelength varies with the ESDD. The resolution can be improved with multiple polyimide layers.
