The eight‐eyed haplogyne spider family Plectreuridae Simon, 1893 is one of the oldest of spider families, currently comprising two genera (Kibramoa and Plectreurys), 30 extant species and one subspecies. Plectreuridae have not been rigorously examined since 1958, with only three new species added to Plectreurys. This study revisited a subset of taxa from the genus Kibramoa using a combined morphological and multilocus phylogenetic analysis. Species distribution modeling (SDM) was used to investigate the current and paleo distributional patterns of the genus Kibramoa throughout the biodiverse region of the California Floristic Province (CFP). A reexamination of genitalic morphology reflected cryptic species, yet multilocus Bayesian and maximum likelihood analyses of mitochondrial (COI, 16S) and nuclear (ITS1, 28S) markers consistently suggested several divergent lineages. A time‐calibrated phylogeny indicated that the most recent common ancestor of Kibramoa appeared in the Mid‐Miocene and continued to diversify throughout the Plio‐Pleistocene. Xerophilic Kibramoa, as inferred by SDM, had a much wider distribution during the Mid‐Holocene, when climate was at its warmest. This body of work uncovered novel findings regarding the evolution of plectreurids, provided the first phylogeny of the family, and demonstrated similar biogeographic patterns displayed in other CFP taxa.

Seven new species of the spider genus Ochyrocera from cave areas in Floresta Nacional de Carajás (state of Pará, northern Brazil) are described: Ochyrocera varys sp. n., Ochyrocera atlachnacha sp. n., Ochyrocera laracna sp. n., Ochyrocera aragogue sp. n., Ochyrocera misspider sp. n., Ochyrocera charlotte sp. n., and Ochyrocera ungoliant sp. n. Two groups of the species are discussed, the quinquivittata group that include specimens with an apparently bifid retrolateral apophysis in the cymbium of the male palp and the arietina group, here proposed, that include those specimens with an entire cymbium, with no retrolateral apophysis, in the male palp. Although these species were abundant inside caves, the examined specimens do not have troglomorphic characteristics and can be classified as edaphic troglophile species, capable of completing its life cycle in soil, shallow subterranean habitats, or caves.

Geometric regularity of spider webs has been intensively studied in orb-weaving spiders, although it is not exclusive of orb weavers. Here, we document the geometrically regular, repetitive elements in the webs of the non-orb-weaving groups Leptonetidae and Telemidae for the first time. Similar to orb weavers, we found areas with regularly spaced parallel lines in the webs of Calileptoneta helferi, Sulcia sp., and cf. Pinelema sp. Furthermore, we provide a detailed account of the regular webs of Ochyrocera (Ochyroceratidae). The sections of the web with regularly disposed parallel lines are built as U-shaped modules reminiscent of orb webs. It has been suggested that the regularly spaced parallel lines in the webs of Ochyroceratidae and Psilodercidae may be produced in a single sweep of their posterior lateral spinnerets, which have regularly spaced aciniform gland spigots, perhaps involving expansion of the spinnerets. To test this hypothesis, we compared the spacing between parallel lines with the spacing between spigots, searched for expansible membranes in the spinnerets, and examined the junctions of regularly spaced lines. The distance between parallel lines was 10-20 times the distance between spigots, and we found no expansible membranes, and the intersection of parallel lines are cemented, which opposes the single sweep hypothesis. Furthermore, we found cues of viscid silk in the parallel lines of the psilodercid Althepus and broadened piriform gland spigots that may be responsible of its production. Finally, we evaluated the presence or absence of geometrically regular web elements across the spider tree of life. We found reports of regular webs in 31 spider families, including 20 families that are not orb weavers and hypothesize that the two basic aspects of regularity (parallel lines spaced at regular intervals, and radial lines spaced at regular angles) probably appeared many times in the evolution of spiders.
