Insights on the OAFlux ocean surface vector wind analysis merged from scatterometers and passive microwave radiometers (1987 onward)

Abstract: A high-resolution global daily analysis of ocean surface vector winds (1987 onward) was developed by the Objectively Analyzed air-sea Fluxes (OAFlux) project. This study addressed the issues related to the development of the time series through objective synthesis of 12 satellite sensors (two scatterometers and 10 passive microwave radiometers) using a least-variance linear statistical estimation. The issues include the rationale that supports the multisensor synthesis, the methodology and strategy that were d… Show more

“…w EK is the Ekman pumping velocity and was computed from satellite-based wind stress product from the Objectively Analyzed air-sea Fluxes (OAFlux) project (Yu & Jin, 2014). The β term denotes the vertical velocity reduction due to the meridional velocity v g in the surface layer, and v g was computed from the thermal wind equations using the Ishii temperature and salinity analysis.…”

“…noaa.gov/psd/) as described in Reynolds et al (2002). For the calculation of wind stress curl we use wind stress products from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution objectively analyzed air-sea fluxes (OAFlux) project (Yu and Jin 2014; available online at http://oaflux. whoi.edu/), calculated using the COARE 3.0 algorithm, which has a horizontal resolution of 0.258.…”

“…The averaging and smoothing required to produce monthly gridded datasets (RGAC and ECCO v4) helps to reduce the impact of aliased variability associated with mesoscale eddies (see, e.g., Forget et al 2011). We then assess the extent to which water mass volume changes are driven by air-sea exchanges of heat (Speer 1993) using various air-sea flux products (ECCO v4; Kalnay et al 1996;Yu et al 2006;Dee et al 2011). We further use ECCO v4 to determine the contributions from lateral transports to water mass inventory changes between 268 and 458N and go on to assess the relationship between those transport variations and perturbations in the wind stress curl (Dee et al 2011;Yu and Jin 2014) during the same period.…”

“…A high‐resolution global analysis of daily‐mean ocean‐surface vector winds from 1987 onward has been recently developed by the Objectively Analyzed air‐sea Fluxes (OAFlux) project through objective synthesis of 12 satellite wind sensors [ Yu and Jin , ; hereafter YJ14]. The 12 satellite sensors include 2 scatterometers that have wind speed and direction retrievals and 10 passive microwave radiometers that have wind speed retrievals only.…”
