Insights into the Immunopathophysiology of Severe COVID-19 in Metabolic Disorders

Abstract: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has affected millions of people across the world but disproportionately and severely affects persons with metabolic disorders such as obesity, diabetes mellitus, and hypertension. In this brief review, we discuss the pathways of immune dysregulation that may lead to severe COVID-19 in persons with metabolic conditions.

“…There is a link between higher DPP4 activity and expression and metabolic syndrome (MS) and obesity. [159][160][161][162] This suggests a direct metabolic and endocrine relationship to the viral pathogenesis, emphasizing the need for proper treatment in COVID-19 patients with these comorbidities. 163 DPP4 is believed to be a co-receptor for the entrance of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and as DPP4 dysregulation is associated with disease severity in COVID-19, it is important to learn more about how DPP4 inhibition affects the course of the illness.…”
