Insights into the epidemiological link between biting flies and pemphigus foliaceus in southeastern Brazil

Abstract: An epidemiological link between biting flies and PF in southeastern Brazil is proposed, implying a possible role of the salivary proteins from these flies in PF etiopathogenesis.

“…Most present frequent bites of black (Simuliidae) and sand flies (Phlebotominae), vectors of onchocerciasis and leishmaniasis, respectively. Bites were suggested to increase up to almost five times the susceptibility to PF ( 17 , 18 ), and components of the fly saliva may trigger a cross-reaction against keratinocyte surface epitopes ( 19 ). Viral or bacterial etiology was also suggested ( 5 , 11 ).…”

“…PF is subdivided into classic sporadic worldwide Cazenave’s pemphigus and endemic pemphigus (known in Brazil as Fogo Selvagem ). Although the pathogenesis of PF remains unclear, genetic and environmental factors have been implicated in the susceptibility to this disease 9 , 10 . Interestingly, some salivary proteins of sand flies have been associated with pemphigus etiopathogenesis.…”
