“…Sixth, billions of birds are sold annually via live bird markets (LBMs) in China because many Chinese believe that the birds in LBMs are safer and more delicious (our unpublished data). This adds fuel to the fire of AIV because LBMs are hubs for viral aggregation, replication, re-assortment, mutation, spread and human infection (Li et al, 2019;Su et al, 2015;Yu et al, 2014). Seventh, billions of birds are transported from poultry farms to LBMs, and transportation can transmit AIV to distant poultry farms via vehicles and personnel if appropriate biosecurity protocols are not followed (Lu, Leigh Brown, & Lycett, 2017).…”

“…For example, vaccination in poultry from 2017 has successfully prevented the prevalence of the H7N9 influenza virus in China and eradicated human infection with the H7N9 virus [ 46–48 ]. However, a previous study indicated that up to 57% of the chickens with high HI antibody titer (mean titer was 7.8 log 2 ) were infected with the H9N2 virus within five days of being transferred to the LBM [ 49 ]. Although the chickens were well vaccinated with H9N2 vaccines, the chickens were not completely protected from H9N2 virus infection in the LBM.…”

“…Previous studies indicate that H9N2 influenza viruses provided their internal genes to the H7N9 and H10N8 viruses that have caused human infections in China [27,28]. Given that the H9N2 viruses are actively circulating in the live poultry markets [4,29], the H3N2 avian influenza viruses may also acquire the internal genes from the H9N2 viruses and adapt in domestic poultry or even “jump” to humans.…”
