Insights and trends review: artificial intelligence in hand surgery

Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) in hand surgery is an emerging and evolving field that will likely play a large role in the future care of our patients. However, there remain several challenges to makes this technology meaningful, acceptable and usable at scale. In this review article, we discuss basic concepts in AI, including challenges and key considerations, provide an update on how AI is being used in hand and wrist surgery and propose potential future applications. The aims are to equip clinicians and resea… Show more

“…OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, is aware of this issue, and refining the algorithm for this use may substantially improve ChatGPT or other potential LLMs applicability in the academic sphere. While AI is an exciting frontier, considerations for its use need to be transparent and the inner workings should be understood at least in theory by clinicians who will use them (Miller et al., 2023). Therefore, caution must be taken to ensure that the use of LLMs, such as ChatGPT, in this context until it is both accurate and safe.…”

“…problems of multiple testing, small samples, lack of normal distribution, etc.). In cases where there remains little available evidence or where it seems unlikely to gather sufficient evidence, the Delphi method can be an elegant method to gather the opinions of experts in the field and be used to generate eminence-based recommendations for the management of hand surgery patients (Crowe et al., 2023; Miller et al., 2023).…”

“…The dramatic improvements in development and implantation of artificial intelligence (AI) throughout society in general, and medicine in particular, has the potential to change the landscape of decision-making and patient management in hand surgery and related research (Miller et al., 2023). Perhaps, first and foremost, machine-learning algorithms have the potential to automatically search large amounts of scientific literature and identify patterns and trends that may uncover previously unknown relationships or associations.…”

“…AI has found its place in plastic surgery including applications in burns, hand surgery, wound analysis, breast surgery, head and neck surgery, flap monitoring, and aesthetics. [3][4][5] For instance, in burn treatment, AI-powered tools assist in accurately assessing burn severity and recommending optimal treatment options. 6 In hand surgery, AI aids surgeons in precise planning and execution of intricate procedures.…”
