External Corrosion Behavior of Steel/GFRP Composite Pipes in Harsh Conditions

In this study, we report on the corrosion behavior of hybrid steel/glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) composite pipes under harsh corrosive conditions for prolonged durations. Specimens were immersed in highly concentrated solutions of hydrochloric acid, sodium chloride, and sulfuric acid for durations up to one year. Detailed qualitative analysis using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) is presented. It is shown that the hybrid pipes have excellent corrosion resistance with a corrosion rate of less than 1% of the corrosion rate for conventional steel pipes. That low corrosion rate can be attributed to the formation of pores in the GFRP layer due to increased absorption and saturation moisture in the material with increased soaking time. This can be reduced or even prevented through a more controlled process for fabricating the protective layers. These promising results call for more utilization of GFRP protective layers in novel design concepts to control corrosion.

Electrochemical and surface analysis methods were used to investigate the pitting susceptibility and propagation of as-received and dry-wet cycle exposed 5083 aluminum alloy (AA5083) specimens. We find that dry-wet cycle exposure can reduce the corrosion potential, while increasing the corrosion current density, pitting potential (E p ), and passivation range. The pitting corrosion behavior during the dry-wet cycle process depends on the exposure temperature and time. Increased exposure temperature and time result in reduced pitting percentage and corrosion altitude and decreased microhardness of the corrosion products, which promotes the pitting sensitivity of AA5083. The underlying pitting mechanism is proposed by employing the morphology and microstructures of the corrosion products.

Genesis of Nanogalvanic Corrosion Revealed in Pearlitic Steel

Nanoscale, localized corrosion underpins billions of dollars in damage and material costs each year; however, the processes responsible have remained elusive due to the complexity of studying degradative material behavior at nanoscale liquid−solid interfaces. Recent improvements to liquid cell scanning/transmission electron microscopy and associated techniques enable this first look at the nanogalvanic corrosion processes underlying this widespread damage. Nanogalvanic corrosion is observed to initiate at the near-surface ferrite/cementite phase interfaces that typify carbon steel. In minutes, the corrosion front delves deeper into the material, claiming a thin layer of ferrite around all exposed phase boundaries before progressing laterally, converting the ferrite to corrosion product normal to each buried cementite grain. Over the following few minutes, the corrosion product that lines each cementite grain undergoes a volumetric expansion, creating a lateral wedging force that mechanically ejects the cementite grains from their grooves and leaves behind percolation channels into the steel substructure.
