Identifying and appropriately resolving system tradeoffs or effectively evaluating alternatives is a key deliverable of systems engineering. Without proper resolution, system performance is hindered, or suboptimal technologies are chosen. TRIZ, the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving, offers tools and methods to identify and resolve tradeoffs (which it terms contradictions or conflicts). TRIZ recognizes that fundamental performance limits arise when one or more unresolved tradeoffs exist in a system. According to TRIZ, eliminating or reducing the effects of the conflicts is necessary to move to improved system performance. This paper presents a TRIZ Trade Study framework that is useful to identify system conflicts, both across alternatives and within a technology, and at various levels of requirements decomposition, to compare options and optimize how the system performs. The framework was developed to perform a trade study between alternative pharmaceutical production systems, and merges traditional trade study methodologies with classical TRIZ. Specifically, traditional pharmaceutical manufacturing development and manufacturing were traded against an emerging and proposed approach, QbD (Quality by Design). Given TRIZ is scalable and useful to a variety of systems, the application of the TRIZ Trade Study Framework is also broadly applicable across system scale and domains. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The most critical requirements for the lifetime value of a system are its nonfunctional requirements (NFRs) such as reliability, security, maintainability, changeability, etc. These are collectively known as the "ilities," and they are typically not addressed in system design until the functional architecture has been completed. In this paper, we propose the use of quality-based design that modifies this standard process so that those NFRs, which actually reflect the true business needs, are addressed first. This is accomplished through a combination of quality attribute workshops, to elicit and refine quality-based mission objectives, and attribute-driven design, where design heuristics, termed tactics, can be employed in the decomposition of the system. This ensures that the final system better reflects and embodies those architecturally significant requirements rather than having them addressed secondarily. This is an important change since the "ilities" are systemic properties (properties of the system as a whole) rather than properties of individual components or subsystems. Consequently, they are difficult to address in an architecture that has already been decomposed with respect to required functionality. To illustrate the proposed approach, we provide an example based upon the Department of Defense Pre-positioned Expeditionary Assistance Kit.Index Terms-Attribute-driven design (ADD), disaster assistance system, quality attribute workshops, system architecting.

Abstract.Educating systems engineers is a challenge. Most attention in literature is on educating systems engineers on the job; after completion of an educational program at university. Architecting is even more difficult because it encompasses dealing with uncertainty, answering a very open problem and integrating disciplines. While on the job training remains important in developing systems engineers and architects, we present in this paper an effort to start this training already in university. We present systems design and engineering as embedded in a university program. The design of, and experiences with, an individual student project aimed at practicing systems architecting is treated. This involves the set-up of the project, students' results and their experiences.
