This article describes the application of sand therapy to Cognitive Behavioral Play Therapy (CBPT). An overview of CBPT is provided to consider how foundational theoretical aspects are applied to sand therapy. Case examples give the reader insight into how CBPT sand therapy may be used within a play therapy session. Case examples include both directive and non-directive prompts to demonstrate using either or both at appropriate times within a session. These are chosen through collaboration between client and therapist and are tied to treatment goals. Aspects of CBPT, including role play, CBT-focused facilitative responses, and psychoeducation, are also incorporated into the sandtray process.

Discursive Constructions of Death and Dying in Childhood Films

<p>Death and dying is often an uncomfortable and controversial topic within Western society. The ambiguity and often silent nature surrounding death and dying led to the question of how death is depicted in childhood Disney-Pixar films. This paper begins with a review of the relevant literature surrounding death and dying in childhood. Then, through the theories of the new sociology of childhood, neoliberalism and developmental theory, an interdisciplinary approach was used to explore death and dying in 33 Disney-Pixar films. Using critical discourse analysis, the audio, visuals, and close-captions of each film were analyzed for discourses of death and dying. The findings explain how Disney-Pixar films discursively construct death, and how these messages may be interpreted by children, and in particular, sick children. The discussion and findings presented in this paper can support Child Life Specialists (CLS) in their practice when caring for children experiencing end of life.</p>

Behavior analysts are increasingly using acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) as an intervention package in their practice to change socially significant overt behaviors. One children’s movie, Disney Pixar’s Luca, contains an abundance of ACT hexaflex examples throughout the duration of the film. The ACT examples in this movie are well illustrated and thus could be used by practitioners as video examples when working with children and families, as well as when teaching aspiring behavior analysts about ACT. This discussion includes a descriptive analysis of the Luca movie from start to finish, highlighting specific ACT examples and nonexamples demonstrated in the movie. In addition, an accompanying table includes specific time-stamped examples and nonexamples of ACT skills. Lastly, the implications of ACT strategies being used in the media are reviewed. Ultimately, the success of Luca may provide behavior analysts with a model for the dissemination of behavior analytic technology that allows for embedment in cultural practices.
