Inside Cover: Molecular Sieve Membrane: Supported Metal–Organic Framework with High Hydrogen Selectivity (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 3/2010)

Abstract: Membranes derived from metal-organic frameworks present a new category of molecular sieves. As demonstrated by Y. Li., J. Caro et al. in their Communication on page 548 ff., a supported zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-7) membrane exhibits high H 2 selectivity by serving as a molecular sieve. The picture shows the synthesis of the ZIF-7 membrane which includes surface seeding and microwave-assisted solvothermal synthesis.

“…S5, ESIw). It should be noted that similar to the reported MOF membranes [20][21][22][23][24] The performance of the ZIF-95 membrane was confirmed by the separation of equimolar gas mixtures at 325 1C and 1 bar. For the 1 : 1 binary mixtures, the mixture separation factor for H 2 /CO 2 is 25.7, which by far exceeds the corresponding Knudsen coefficient (4.7).…”

“…Indeed, traditional synthesis for involves N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) as a solvent with the associated difficulty to completely remove DMF from the inner cavities. 13,17,18 With this in mind, the main goal of this manuscript is to evaluate the breathing phenomena in small nanocrystals of ZIF-7 prepared using a solvent exchange approach. Under these conditions we will be able to completely remove unreacted chemicals together with the DMF used during the synthesis, thus leaving behind a perfect solvent-free porous structure.…”

“…ZIF-7 [2] can separate CO 2 from N 2 in combustion gas streams at relative low pressures and moderate temperatures [15], and alkanes and alkenes through gate-opening process [16,17]. ZIF-7 has also been synthesized as films on alumina supports and used as membranes in sensors and for gas separation [9], for example separating H 2 from CO 2 [18,19].…”
