Inside Cover: Improving Hydrothermal Carbonization by Using Poly(ionic liquid)s (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 23/2013)

Abstract: Sugars can be directly …︁ …︁ transformed into porous nitrogen‐doped carbon materials in the presence of poly(ionic liquid)s. In their Communication on J. Yuan, Y. Wang, and co‐workers describe the application of this method to synthesize carbon particles 20–50 nm in size and also to synthesize, in one step, nitrogen‐doped carbon materials embedded with core–shell Au–Pd nanoparticles.

“…For anhydrous CsN 5 , Cs transfers maximum negative charge to the N 5 rings to enable both aromaticity of the cyclo ‐N 5 − and ionic bonding between Cs cations and cyclo ‐N 5 − . While for the 3D metal‐ cyclo ‐N 5 − frameworks [Na 8 (N 5 ) 8 (H 2 O) 3 ] n and MPF‐1, every cyclo ‐N 5 − ring was stabilized by five coordination bonds from five sodium cations.…”

“…Highly monodisperse PdAg bimetallic alloy nanoparticles were prepared by simultaneous reduction of Pd(NO 3 ) 2 and AgNO 3 by using oleylamine as solvent, surfactant, and reducing agent. [ 19 ] In a typical synthesis, Pd(NO 3 ) 2 and AgNO 3 were co-dissolved in 20 mL of oleylamine placed in a three-necked fl ask equipped with a condenser and stir bar. The solution was heated to 170 °C under fl owing N 2 and kept at this condition for 2 h in an oil bath.…”

“…Although the promoting effects of Co, Ni and Ag have already been reported, to the best of our knowledge, no attempt has been made to prepare FAD catalyst by seq-impregnation method. 21,27,28 Although none of monometallic catalyst except Pd shows any catalytic activity for FAD reaction (Fig. S1 †), De et al variously showed the role of Ni in inducing the modication of surface properties of bimetallic catalysts.…”
