Since the 1980s, social scientists and economic geographers have stressed that ‘standard’ forms of employment and internal labour markets (ILMs) which characterized Fordism have declined and have been displaced by post‐Fordist non‐standard and contingent employment arrangements. However, some researchers are critical of the assumptions of a universal decline in ILMs and stress that although ILMs have been significantly restructured, they remain an important part of firm employment strategies. On the basis of a postal survey and interviews conducted with ninety firms and institutions in Kitchener‐Waterloo and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, in 1995–1996, I assess the role of ILMs. Although shifts towards non‐standard arrangements are evident, employers are clearly aware of the need to maintain if not develop ILM structures. Finally, I argue that geographers need to reconceptualize the relationships between ILMs and external labour markets (ELMs) as integrated phenomena. Thus firms do not use contingent or ELMs and ILMs in exclusion to each other but as part of a continuum of strategies leading to increased blurring of the ILM and ELMs.

И я бы сказал, что результаты всей этой более чем пятнадцатилетней работы весьма близки к тому, что называют экономической социологией, связаны, сопоставимы с нею. Особенно в критике экономической модели конкуренции -модели, которой не хватает анализа ее исходных посылок. И далее мы подходим к очень важному моменту, который важен и для нашей критики основного направления экономической теории, и близок к экономической социологии -это анализ институтов и посредствующих связей [mediation]. Особенно с точки зрения качества товаров и услуг. Ведь и Дж. Акерлоф, А.М. Спенс и Дж. Стиглиц, эти знаменитые нобелевские лауреаты, в своих исследованиях отталкивались от того факта, что ключевой проблемой является информация, и прежде в модели общего равновесия этой проблеме не уделялось достаточного внимания.И мы тоже изучаем эти проблемы, рассматриваем процесс обретения товаром/благом особого качества ['qualification']. Это социальный процесс в классическом смысле, как понимал его П. Бурдье и в целом как он понимается в социологии. Нам необходимо понять, что в основе координации между людьми лежат товары. Для экономической теории это очевидно. Социологи также уже подчеркивают необходимость такого конструирования. Мне кажется, мы уже достаточно интенсивно занимаемся анализом этого процесса, который мы называем «обретением качества». И конечно же, это еще один способ подойти к изучению координации.И еще одно замечание. Мне хотелось бы подчеркнуть, что экономическая теория -это часть социальных наук. Она опирается на ту же программу исследования, что и социология, -с точки зрения объяснения артефактов, выстроенных человечеством для обеспечения координации. И это полностью противоречит позиции Л. Вальраса, который говорит, что политическая экономия должна стать естественной наукой. Он считает науки о нравах -науками о координации между человеческими существами. Sociologie et sociétésLes problèmes attribués à la théorie du choix rationnel Michael Ces auteurs attribuent à la théorie du choix rationnel (tcr) les faiblesses suivantes : 1) les actes de consommation (lubricité, comportement de foule et conduite irrationnelle en général) tombent tous en dehors de son champ de compétence (Rule) ; 2) les idées sont importantes dans la production de résultats, mais elles se situent nécessairement à l'extérieur de la tcr (Campbell) ; 3) l'action est guidée par des préférences qui, à leur tour, dépendent en partie de normes ; cependant la tcr n'explique pas les préférences et les normes (Boudon, Campbell, Rule) ; 4) la tcr pré-sume que les individus agissent et réfléchissent en fonction de leurs propres intérêts, mais ce n'est pas toujours le cas (Boudon).Il se peut que ces observations soient justes. Néanmoins, je crois qu'elles ne le sont probablement pas. Premièrement, elles semblent toutes présumer qu'il est utile de classer les actions et les pensées en deux catégories distinctes : celles que la tcr peut expliquer et celles qu'elle ne peut expliquer. Cette catégorisation n'est peut-être pas très utile. D'une part, les durées chronologiques font souvent l'objet de critiques : les parents regrettent que leurs enfants adolescents aient des visées à très court terme ; les observateurs européens (par exemple, Albert, 1993) critiquent la gestion à courte vue des Américains (en dépit de leur succès relatif dans des industries comme les technologies d'information et la biotechnologie où le long terme a sans doute été nécessaire).
