Research suggests that touch promotes relationship well-being but has failed to consider motives for touch. We assessed general (Study 1) and daily (Study 2) approach and avoidance motives for touch and tested their precursors and consequences. Controlling for relationship quality and the other motive, greater attachment avoidance predicted lower approach and greater avoidance motives for touch in general but did not predict motives in daily life. Greater attachment anxiety simultaneously predicted greater approach and avoidance motives for touch in both studies suggesting anxiously attached people have ambivalent motives for touch. Critically, one’s own and one’s partner’s approach motives for touch predicted greater daily relationship well-being, whereas own and partner avoidance motives predicted poorer daily relationship well-being. We observed indirect effects linking attachment insecurity to relationship well-being through daily motives for touch. These results underscore the importance of attending to touch motives in future work, including future intervention work.

An important element of well-being during the transition to parenthood is new parents' relationships with their partners and babies. Attachment theory posits that early caregiving experiences influence close relationships throughout the lifespan. Disruptions to the parent-child relationship, such as parental divorce or separation, may therefore have intergenerational effects as adult children of divorce navigate changes in their later relationships. This study examined whether new parents who have experienced a divorce or separation in their family of origin report greater romantic relationship dissatisfaction or impairment in the parent-infant bond during the early postpartum period, and if these associations are mediated by adult attachment. First-time parents of infants through 6 months of age (N = 94) completed measures of adult attachment, romantic relationship satisfaction, and parent-infant bonding. New parents who had experienced parental divorce or separation did not differ from those from intact families with regard to romantic relationship satisfaction, parent-infant bonding, attachment anxiety, or attachment avoidance. Attachment anxiety and avoidance were both associated with romantic relationship dissatisfaction and greater impairment in the parent-infant bond. These findings suggest that the experience of parental divorce or separation, in and of itself, does not confer increased risk for negative relational outcomes among new parents. Securely attached adults, regardless of their own parents' marital status, report more positive relationships with their partners and infants during the early postpartum period.

analizan las posibles repercusiones sobre procesos afectivos y cognitivos cuando se producen alteraciones en la conformación de un apego seguro, a lo largo del ciclo vital pero, particularmente, en la adultez joven debido a las áreas importantes de desempeño en esta edad, como son: la universidad, la formación de pareja y el trabajo. Es así que, en el artículo se realiza una revisión sobre aspectos teóricos del apego, sus implicaciones relacionales y su impacto en la construcción de modelos representacionales que determinan el devenir de las personas y sus relaciones. Se analizan también los tipos de apego y luego, se describen algunas investigaciones realizadas usando este marco teórico, así como también las diversas formas de evaluar el apego a través de escalas y otros instrumentos que han sido validados en Europa y Asia. Se concluye que existe un débil desarrollo de la parte psicométrica en Latinoamérica y se plantea la importancia y necesidad de ampliar esta área en el contexto ecuatoriano.
