Cultural entomology (CE) explores the interactions between the world of insects and mankind. Since the internet plays a major role in nowadays life, it would be of great interest to investigate the insects-related internet usage and activities. However, there are very few studies about this. For this reason, inspired by the seminal work carried out by the Japanese Takada, we decided to replicate his findings. We analyzed with Google Trends and with the wavelet power spectrum analysis (WPSA) the hit-search volumes of the most common insects. We found that the five most commonly searched insects are bees, butterflies, mosquitoes, ants and spiders which are arachnids, but are commonly believed to be insects. We found a seasonality for some insects, as confirmed by the WPSA, and with peaks related to the seasonal period in which the insects are most visible, while we could not detect any regularity or trend for other insects, which are not clearly related to any particular season. In addition, we proved that, at least in some cases, hit-search volumes were influenced by the media and that the degree of seasonal regularity as measured by the WPSA was variable. Thus, we have proven the robustness of previous finding, extending their validity also in another culture and another context. Therefore, rather than being confined to a specific culture, googling insects could be a universal behavior and attitude, even though with some cross-cultural differences. Further systematic research is needed to shed light on this topic.

For successful conservation of diverse insects, it is important to study the current attitude and interest of the general public toward diverse insects from the aspect of cultural entomology. The popularity of different scarabaeid species in Japanese society was therefore investigated. Popularity was assessed by the Google search volume for scarabaeid species names in katakana script, using the Keyword Tool of Google AdWords. As a whole, a relatively small number of scarabaeid species was represented by an extraordinarily high search volume, while an abundance of other species was represented by a low search volume, indicating the biased attention of Japanese to only a small number of scarabeid species. It appears that most of the popular scarabaeids have characteristics of (1) apparent morphological and ecological traits, (2) association with human survival, (3) occurrence of the species around human habitation, and/or (4) their widespread distribution in Japan. In particular, the search volume for "Kabuto-mushi" Trypoxylus dichotomus, a species with a distinctive horn and large body and occur in traditional rural landscapes in a wide range of Japan, was extraordinarily high relative to other s pecies examined. This demonstrates, as also shown in earlier publications, that these beetles strongly fascinate the Japanese general public. Such a distinct preference for Japanese rhinoceros beetles suggests their high potential as a flagship species, which by definition are charismatic species and can become symbols and leading elements in any conservation campaign.

The aim of this paper is to state the importance of insects in culture and, to be specific in the traditionally called "High Arts". Also, how cultural variety, trends in art, and obviously the idiosyncrasy of those artistic objects where insects are used as a source of inspiration, obviously have an impact on the different forms in which insects are represented.We will show a selection of examples as a chronological, not comprehensive guide through the manifold forms and symbolism linked to the representation of insects within each of these Arts. Also, how their long-standing relationship with mankind and its cultural milieu, even in spite of occasionally having negative connotations has in fact helped towards the preservation of biodiversity. There is no denying that cultural diversity and biodiversity are closely related.
