A field study was carried out from 1996 to 1998 to identify and determine the seasonal abundance and species composition of stemborers attacking chewing sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) in farmers’ fields at four different locations in Niger state of Nigeria. Three lepidopterous species (Chilo zacconius Blesz, Sesamia calamistis Hamp, Busseola fusca Fuller and one Dipterous species, (Diopsis thoracica Westw.), were found attacking the crop with variable period of occurrence and abundance. Highest occurrence and abundance of these species occurred in the months of June to October. C. zacconius, D. thoracica and S. calamistis were the most predominant species occurring in the sugarcane fields. Scirpophaga spp. C. zacconius and S. calamistis were collected in the light trap.
