Abstract:The genus Silene (family Caryophyllaceae) comprises more than 700 species, which are widely distributed in temperate zones of the Northern Hemisphere, but are also present in Africa and have been introduced in other continents. Silene produces a high diversity of secondary metabolites and many of them show interesting biological and pharmacological activities. More than 450 compounds have been isolated; important classes include phytoecdysteroids (which mimic insect molting hormones), triterpene saponins (with detergent properties), volatiles, other terpenoids and phenolics. This review focusses on the phytochemical diversity, distribution of Silene secondary metabolites and their biological activities.

The seeking of new alternatives of synthetic insecticides for the safe environment and health has become an important issue of scientifi c research which may enable us to obtain safe foods. Although botanical insecticides (BIs) can never entirely replace the amounts of produced synthetic insecticides, they may signifi cantly contribute to seeking the solution of problems associated with application of synthetic pesticides. Three most important arguments support the use of BIs: environmental safety, low or no toxicity for vertebrates and prevention of resistance development. The above-mentioned assets of BIs make us believe in the need of increasing the society-wide efforts leading to further expansion of practical use of these products. However, despite these assets, several limiting factors are associated with BIs that prevent their wider use or restrict their practical applications. This chapter is an effort to critically summarise the advantages and disadvantages of botanical insecticides including major factors that pose limitations to their practical use.

Summary. The use of matrix solid-phase dispersion (MSPD) was tested to extract some coumarins (umbelliferone, xanthotoxin, isopimpinellin, bergapten, and pimpinellin) from Pimpinella roots. The method was compared with liquid-solid extraction methods (LSE) such as accelerated solvent extraction (ASE), ultrasound-assisted extraction (USAE) and Soxhlet extraction followed by solid-phase extraction (SPE). Several methanol concentrations and temperature conditions were examined during the liquidsolid extraction techniques. The analysis was performed by high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array detector (HPLC-DAD). MSPD extracted furanocoumarins with satisfactory recoveries ranging from 91.65% to 97.55% and relative standard deviations lower than 5,0415%. The results presented in the paper reveal that MSPD is an efficient, fast, simple and easy-to-perform method suitable for the isolation of furanocoumarins from herbs.
