Insecticide resistance in field populations of the tomato fruitworm, Helicoverpa armigera, from Senegal

Abstract: Monitoring of the evolution of insecticide resistance in the field is crucial to prevent pest control issues. The present study was conducted to assess insecticide resistance status of the fruitworm, Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae), the most destructive pest of field-grown tomato in Senegal. A sample of 11- 15 field populations were monitored for their susceptibility to abamectin, deltamethrin, and profenofos, using a standard leaf-dip bioassay method. Resistance ratios ranged from 1- to… Show more

“…Chemical control is the main strategy used to control pests as consequence of the role of natural enemies in the biological control of pests is very poorly understood by vegetable farmers in Senegal. Indeed, chemical control causes environmental pollution [3] and pesticide resistance to insects [4]. Chemical control contributes significantly to the loss of ecosystem services such as biological pest control and favours pest damage to crops.…”

“…La lutte chimique est la principale stratégie préconisée contre les ravageurs. Elle entraine toutefois une pollution environnementale (Gomgnimbou et al, 2009) et des phénomènes de résistance aux pesticides (Sène et al, 2020). La plupart des familles d'insectes sont très mal connues dans la zone agroécologique de la Casamance car peu de travaux de recherches ont été effectués.…”

“…On the other hand, hot pepper is cultivated the whole year in tropical areas. Tomato is the second most important vegetable in Senegal (Diallo et al, 2017;Sene et al, 2020). The importance of tomato and hot pepper is due to their content of minerals, antioxydants, and vitamins that are indispensable for the growth and proper functioning of human organs (Glodjinon et al, 2020).…”
