Methoxyfenozide is an insect growth disruptor belonging to the class of nonsteroidal ecdysone agonists. In the present study, methoxyfenozide (23% emulsifiable concentrate) is evaluated against newly molted fourth‐instar larvae of Culex pipiens L. and Culiseta longiareolata Macquart (Diptera: Culicidae), aiming to investigate its possible effects on growth and development. Larvae are exposed for 24 h under standard laboratory conditions in accordance with World Health Organization recommendations. The product is found to exhibit insecticidal activity against the two tested mosquito species with a concentration–response relationship. Moreover, based on the lethal concentrations determined, methoxyfenozide is slightly more toxic against C. pipiens than C. longiareolata. Furthermore, fourth‐instar larva of the two mosquito species are treated using two lethal concentrations (LC50 and LC90) of methoxyfenozide, and then individual survivals (larvae, pupae and adults) from larval treatment are subjected to a biometrical and biochemical study. The compound is found to interfere with growth by reducing the larval and pupal development duration. Moreover, the body volume and the main biochemical contents (proteins, carbohydrates and lipids) from different stages are affected. The overall results suggest that the ecdysone agonist under investigation interferes with the development process and has potential for mosquito control.

The effects of dietary applied of β-damascone and its synthetic derivatives γ- and δ-halolactones, which show strong antifeedant activity, on the growth and development of larvae of the lesser mealworm, Alphitobius diaperinus Panzer (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), were studied. Bioassays were performed in a dose-dependent manner. In the bioassays, oat flakes treated with 1.0, 0.5, and 0.1 % (w/v) acetone solutions of the tested compound or acetone alone as control were served as food. The experiments were conducted using 2-week-old larvae with an average body weight of 4.35–4.88 mg. High correlations between antifeedant activity and larvicidal and growth-inhibitory effects were observed. Larvae reared on diets containing the compounds (at a concentration of 1 %) with high deterrent activity were characterized by a prolonged period of development, lower body weight gain, and strong tendency for cannibalism as a result of starvation. The control larvae ended their development after 24 days with a mean body weight of 22.9 mg. At the same developmental time, the mean body weights of larvae treated with the δ-halolactones γ-chloro- and γ-bromo-δ-lactone were only 60.3 % and 43.2 % of that of the control larvae. The larval periods for larvae on the diets containing γ-chloro- and γ-bromo-δ-lactone were 33 and 41 days, respectively. The larval developmental time and body weight gain were not significantly influenced by lower doses of the compounds, with the exception of γ-bromo-δ-lactone. This compound, when applied at a concentration of 0.5 %, significantly prolonged larval development as compared to the control larvae, and caused high mortality of larvae and pupae. The adult emergence percentage was 37.51 % when this treatment was applied, as compared to 90.0 % in the control. Thus, β-damascone derivatives with a lactone ring exhibit both dose-dependent behavioral effects and post-ingestion toxicity against A. diaperinus larvae, and may have the potential to control this pest.

Systemic deterrence of aphid probing and feeding by novel β-damascone analogues

β-Damascone appeared a weak attractant close to not active to Myzus persicae, but modifications of its structure caused the avoidance of treated leaves by aphids during settling and reluctance to probe in simple choice- and no-choice experiments in previous studies. Here, the electrical penetration graph (EPG) technique, which allows monitoring of aphid probing within plant tissues, was applied to explore the biological background and localisation in plant tissues of the deterrent activities of β-damascone and its analogues. Activity of β-damascone and β-damascone-derived compounds depended on their substituents, which was manifested in the variation in the potency of the behavioural effect and differences in aphid probing phases that were affected. β-Damascone appeared a behaviourally inactive compound. The moderately active β-damascone ester affected aphid activities only during the phloem phase. The highly active deterrents—dihydro-β-damascol, β-damascone acetate, δ-bromo-γ-lactone, and unsaturated γ-lactone—affected pre-phloem and phloem aphid probing activities. The most effective structural modification that evoked the strongest negative response from M. persicae was the transformation of β-damascone into δ-bromo-γ-lactone. The behavioural effect of this transformation was demonstrated in frequent interruption of probing in peripheral tissues, which caused repeated failures in finding sieve elements, and reduction in the ingestion time during the phloem phase in favour of watery salivation. The inhibition of aphid probing at both the pre-phloem and phloem levels reveals the passage of the compounds studied through the plant surface and their distribution within plant tissues in a systemic way, which may reduce the risk of the transmission of non-persistent and persistent viruses.
