Insecticidal potency of novel compounds on multiple insect species of medical and veterinary importance

Abstract: Laboratory quantification of LC(50) values and field efficacy of three semiochemicals as formulated compounds on mosquitoes, houseflies, stable flies and sand flies showed that these semiochemicals could serve as potent insecticides for multiple insect species.

“…Mosquitoes are a most important vector of pathogens causing human and animal diseases, with more than one‐half of the world population being at risk of malaria (Kaufman et al ., ; Benelli, ; Börstler et al ., ). Mosquitoes are major contributors to the total global burden of disease and have profound effects on the socio‐economic development of affected countries (Borah et al ., ).…”

“…It is mainly used in the perfume industry due to its pleasant smell, but it is also known for its insecticidal activity. According to Kaufman et al ( 2011 ), β-damascone could be used against insecticide-resistant strains of the housefly, Musca domestica L. (Diptera: Muscidae), and other biting flies of medical and veterinary importance. Derivatives of it with a lactone ring that were synthesized in our lab showed high antifeedant activity against the lesser mealworm, Alphitobius diaperinus Panzer (Gliszczyńska et al 2014 ).…”

“…Since that time it has been widely used in perfume compositions. It has also received certain attention as a potential cancer chemopreventive and a mosquito and muscoid insecticide (Askham et al 2005 ; Butler 2006 ; Gerhauser et al 2009 ; Kaufman et al 2011 ). Apart from that, information on the effect of β -damascone on arthropods and their behaviour is very scarce.…”
