Insecticidal Mechanism of Wintergreen Oil Against the Health Pest Paederus fuscipes (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae)

Abstract: Paederus fuscipes, a health pest, causes dermatitis linearis in humans. Wintergreen oil exhibits optimal insecticidal activity against P. fuscipes. However, the insecticidal mechanism remains unclear not only in P. fuscipes but also in other pests. In this study, we explored the insecticidal mechanism of wintergreen oil in terms of its effect on the activity of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) enzyme and detoxifying enzymes (carboxylesterase, glutathione-S-transferase, and mixed function oxidase); such effect was s… Show more

“…C. pipiens pallens fourth instar larvae were treated with 100 ppm (LC 30 dosage) of ar-turmerone in 1% DMSO water solution. The treatment dosage was referred to Liu et al (2018) [ 26 ]. The samples were collected at 1, 6, 12, 18 and 24 h after treatment, respectively.…”

“…The antimicrobial activity, i.e., antibacterial and antifungal, was mainly studied for the essential oil [ 9 , 10 , 42 , 43 , 44 , 47 , 48 , 49 , 51 , 52 , 53 , 55 , 144 , 145 , 146 , 147 ], and extracts prepared from leaves and aerial parts of G. procumbens [ 49 , 148 , 149 ]. The literature data also indicated the larvicidal and insecticidal activity of the essential oil [ 39 , 45 , 56 , 57 , 58 , 150 , 151 , 152 , 153 , 154 , 155 , 156 , 157 , 158 , 159 , 160 , 161 ] and plant extracts [ 162 ]. Reports on the antifungal and antibacterial activity of plant extracts and essential oils were partially divergent.…”

“…The AChE activity in the male and female adults treated with oil was significantly lower than those treated with 10 mg• L −1 chlorpyrifos. Therefore, the insecticidal mechanism of wintergreen oil is probably a result of the inhibition of AChE activity, which produces the insecticidal effect [190] . AChE is an important target for insect resistance by affecting the nervous system [191] .…”
