Article InfoCulex quinquefasciatus is the vector that transmits the causative agent of filariasis which poses a great threat to the world at large. Storage pest are nuisance to farmers because they destroy farm products either in the store or in the farm. In this study, the insecticidal activity of Pseudocedrela kotschyi stem bark extract was tested against the fourth instar larvae of Culex quinquefasciatus and adult Sitophilus zeamais. A total of three hundred and sixty 4 th instar larvae of Culex quinquefasciatus were divided into six groups each consisting of three replicates containing twenty larvae each. Groups one to four were each administered one of the following dose: 1000mg, 250mg, 125mg and 62.5mg of the ethanolic stem bark extract of P. kotschyi. Group five was treated with a standard drug (permethrin 0.6%) and the last group was neither treated with the extract nor the standard drug. The highest concentration 1000mg of the plant extract had 98.33% mortality followed by 250mg which exhibited 61.67%, 125mg with 48.33% mortality and 62.5 with 25%. There was 100% mortality in the group treated with standard drug and no mortality in the control. Analysis of variance showed significant difference (p<0.05) in the mortality of larvae between the different extract levels.The mortality of the Sitophilus zeamais was observed for 7 daysafter exposure. The highest percentage mortality of 53.33% was recorded inthe weevils treated with 750mgof the plant extract followed by 1750mg which had 50% and the lowest concentration of 500mg plant extract had the lowest mortality of33.33%. However, there is no significant difference (p>0.05) between the mortality of the groups administered extract at different concentrations. From the result, it can be tentatively concluded here; based on this research that P. kotschyi can act as a bio-pesticide of plant origin which will be less toxic to man and other organisms.

RESUMOO presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a toxicidade por fumigação, o efeito repelente, o efeito na oviposição e na emergência da geração F1 dos óleos essenciais de Croton heliotropiifolius Kunth., Croton pulegiodorus Baill., Myracrodruon urundeuva Allemão e Ocimum basilicum L. sobre Zabrotes subfasciatus, em cinco doses (0,0, 5, 10, 15 e 20 μL L -1 de ar (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) in common beans stored ABSTRACTThe present study aimed to evaluate the toxicity by fumigation, the repellent effect, the effect on the oviposition and emergence of the F1 generation of essential oils of Croton heliotropiifolius Kunth., Croton pulegiodorus Baill., Myracrodruon urundeuva Allemão and Ocimum basilicum L. on Zabrotes subfasciatus, in five doses (0.0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 μL L -1 of air). Track fumigation the essential oils of O. basilicum and C. pulegiodorus caused 100% mortality of adults of Z. subfasciatus, at all doses except the witness. The oils of O. basilicum, C. pulegiodorus and M. urundeuva were repellents in all doses, while C. heliotropiifolius doses 20 e 5 μL were classified as neutral and other repellents. In this sense, the oils of O. basilicum and C. pulegiodorus resulted in the highest values of reduction of eggs and 100% reduction in adults emerged, featuring ovicidal effect/larvicide about Z. subfasciatus during storage. It is therefore considered that the oils of O. basilicum and C. pulegiodorus are promising in the control of populations of Z. subfasciatus, being required further studies to define the best dose to be used, as well as the best way of application.

R E S U M OCom este trabalho se avaliaram o índice de preferência e o efeito inseticida do óleo de carqueja doce (Baccharis articulata) sobre o caruncho do feijão (Acanthoscelides obtectus). Para a realização do experimento foram utilizados insetos não sexados, com idade entre 20 e 50 dias. O óleo essencial foi extraido da parte aérea da planta pelo método de hidrodestilação. O experimento foi conduzido conforme o delineamneto inteiramente casualizado, com 6 repetições, em esquema fatorial 6 x 3 e 6 x 7 (dose x tempo), respetivamente, para repelência e para atividade inseticida. Os testes de repelência e da atividade inseticida foram realizados com as doses de 0, 10, 20, 30, 50 e 100 µL de óleo essencial em 20 g de grãos de feijão sendo a avaliação realizada depois de transcorridas 24, 48 e 72 h para a repelência e após 1, 6, 12, 24, 48, 72 e 96 h para a atividade inseticida. Os resultados demonstram que a dosagem, o tempo de exposição e a interação tiveram efeito significativo na mortalidade dos insetos. Em relação à dosagem, seu aumento proporcionou incremento logaritmico na taxa de mortalidade sendo verificada, na dose aproximada de 52 µL, a morte de 90% dos insetos. O tempo de exposição de 35 h provocou a morte de 90% dos insetos. Também, foi observado efeito repelente do óleo essencial nas dosagens e tempos de exposição estudados.Insecticide and repellent activity of the essential oil from carqueja doce on bean weevil A B S T R A C TThe present study evaluated the preference index and insecticidal effect of oil "Carqueja doce" (Baccharis articulata) on the bean weevil (Acanthoscelides obtectus). For the experiment, insects not sexed aged between 20 and 50 days were used. The essential oil was extracted from the aerial parts of the plant by the hydrodistillation method. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design with 6 replications in a factorial scheme 6 x 3 and 6 x 7 (dose x time), respectively, for preference index and insecticidal effect. Tests of repellency and insecticidal activity were conducted with doses of 0, 10, 20, 30, 50 and 100 µL of essential oil in 20 g of beans, being the evaluation carried out after 24, 48 and 72 h for repellency and after 1, 6, 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96 h for the insecticidal activity. The results showed that the dose, exposure duration and interaction had significant effect on insect mortality. Regarding the dose, the logarithmic increase in the mortality rate was produced by the increase in dose, with an approximately 52 µL dose which recorded death in 90% of the insects. The exposure time of 35 h caused the death of 90% of insects. Also, the essential oil repellent effect was observed at doses and exposure times studied.
