“…In 1937, Robinson's group devised the synthesis of cyperone sesquiterpenes, [57] which possess interesting properties as insecticide (Scheme 18). [58] Scheme 18. Robinson's synthesis of cyperones using dihydrocarvone.…”

“…Insecticidal and antifeeding effects have been reported for other sesquiterpenes against different insect species (Wang et al 1991; Gonzalez et al 1993;Dadang et al 1996). The results of previous works by Céspedes et al (2001) and Alarcon et al (2013) reported feeding deterrent and insecticidal activities of certain eudesmane-type sesquiterpenoids against S. frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) larvae and Drosophila melanogaster, respectively. In a previous paper, we reported the isolation and identification of twelve eudesmane-type sesquiterpenoids from a Bolivian collection of P. sagittalis, together with their antifeedant activity at 100 µg / g of diet against S. frugiperda, under chosen conditions (Vera et al 2008).…”

“…Eudesmanes that had a hydroperoxide (5) or formoxi groups in their structures (1 and 7) were the most active, while the eudesmanes possessing an acetyl group in position 4 lost such activity noticeably. Additionally, an ,-unsaturated system played an important role in antifeedant activity, as seen when comparing compound 2 with compound 3, that showed a low activity (Table 1) Alarcon et al (2013). The sites and mode of action of these compounds are being investigated and probably correspond to a combination of antifeedant action, as well as insecticidal and insect growth regulation activities.…”

“…The bioassay for insecticidal activity against larvae of D . melanogaster was performed as follows: approximately 100 adults from colonies of D . melanogaster were introduced into culture bottles containing artificial diet in a Petri dish and were allowed to oviposit at 25 °C and relative humidity > 60% for 3 h. The diet was taken out of the bottle, and ten new eggs were collected and transplanted onto 1 mL of artificial diet containing 10, 30, 50, 70 or 100 μg/mL of essential oils of D .…”

“…for Insecticidal Activity against D. melanogaster Larvae. The bioassay for insecticidal activity against larvae of D. melanogaster was performed as follows [52] : approximately 100 adults from colonies of D. melanogaster were introduced into culture bottles containing artificial diet in a Petri dish and were allowed to oviposit at 25°C and relative humidity > 60% for 3 h. The diet was taken out of the bottle, and ten new eggs were collected and transplanted onto 1 mL of artificial diet containing 10,30,50,70 or 100 lg/mL of essential oils of D. tagetiflora, or a control diet containing 50 lL of EtOH. The eggs were placed in glass tubes containing the experimental diet and reared at 25°C and relative humidity > 90% for 8 d. One day after transplantation, the larvae were hatched and fed artificial diet with the appropriate test compound concentration.…”
