Insecticidal Activity and Free Radical Scavenging Properties of Isolated Phytoconstituents from the Saudi Plant Nuxia oppositifolia (Hochst.)

Abstract: Chromatographic purification of the alcoholic extract from the aerial parts of the Saudi plant Nuxia oppositifolia (Hochst.), Benth., resulted in five isolated phenolic compounds. Two flavones, hispidulin (1) and jaceosidin (2), and the phenylethanoid glycosides, verbascoside (3), isoverbascoside (4), and conandroside (5), were identified and their chemical structures were determined by spectroscopic analyses. The insecticidal activity of compounds 1 and 2, in addition to 11 compounds isolated in a previous re… Show more

“…Anise oil enhances thermotolerance and antiviral responses by triggering salicylic acid (SA) and jasmonic acid (JA)-associated defense pathways in tomato (Tsai et al, 2019). 4 0 ,5,7-trihydroxy-3,6-dimethoxyflavone (jaceosidin), a 6-O-methylated flavonoid, has insecticidal activity against the mosquito Aedes aegypti and free radical scavenging activities (Al-Massarani et al, 2021). Jaceosidin enhances resistance against necrotrophic and biotrophic plant pathogens by SA and JA signaling (Song et al, 2013).…”

“…This compound belongs to the class of ketone sesquiterpenoids produced from the mevalonate acid pathway which has activity as an anti-feedant, hormone, antimicrobial, antibiotic and toxin as well as a plant growth regulator [25]. α-cyperone is also found in the rhizome and tuber oils of nutgrass from South Africa and Saudi Arabia and in the essential oil of the nutgrass chemotypes (types H, K, M, and O) in Asia [26,27]. This compound has good antioxidant activity, has a protective effect against DNA damage, a cytotoxic effect on human SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells, and also an antibacterial effect against foodborne pathogens [28].…”
