Mentha longifolia (L.) and Lavandula dentata (L.) (Lamiaceae) are two wild growing folk medicine plants that in Saudi Arabia. This work was conducted to investigate the chemical composition and evaluate the fumigant toxicity of their essential oils against the adults (3-5-day-old) of cowpea beetle, Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) (Coleoptera: Bruchidae). The main compounds in M. longifolia oil were pulegone (74.95%), 1,8-cineole (7.35%), l-menthone (6.62%), and eucarvone (2.68%), while the main constituents in L. dentata oil were camphor (61.43%), fenchone (24.3%), d-fenchol (2.15%), and linalool (1.52%). The two oils showed LC 50 values of 4.43 and 7.92 µl/L air and exhibited antiacetylcholinesterase activity with IC50 values of 1.01 and 9.74 µl/ml, respectively. The results proved the potential use of these natural materials as effective alternatives to synthetic pesticides.

The effects of the essential oil from the leaves of Mentha longifolia L. subsp. capensis on some biochemical parameters of Wistar rats were studied. The oil at 125, 250, 375, and 500 microL/kg of body weight reduced (P < .05) the red blood cells and lymphocytes with no definite pattern on the white blood cells and mean cell volume. The doses significantly increased the neutrophils, monocytes, large unstained cells, liver-body weight ratio, and serum concentrations of cholesterol, triglyceride, high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, and inorganic phosphate but had no effect on the heart body weight ratio and serum low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, Na(+), Ca(2+), Cl(-), K(+), creatinine, and uric acid. The oil at 500 microL/kg of body weight also increased the kidney-body weight ratio. In contrast, the oil reduced the serum urea and atherogenic index. The total and conjugated bilirubin, together with the total protein and albumin, in the serum increased only with oil at 125 microL/kg of body weight. The serum alkaline phosphatase activity also increased with no significant change in those of gamma-glutamyl transferase and alanine and aspartate aminotransferase. The results indicate dose- and parameter-specific effect of the essential oil. Although the essential oil from M. longifolia leaves may not predispose to atherosclerosis, it may increase the functional activity of the rat liver at the lowest dose investigated. Therefore, the essential oil from M. longifolia may not be completely "safe" at the doses investigated.

Citrullus colocynthis (L.) Schrad seeds generally called Egusi melon are widely eaten in Nigeria, but its uses in post-harvest crop protection have not been exploited. The effects of the edible oil of C. colocynthis seeds on Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) were assessed on adult mortality, oviposition, F 1 progeny emergence, cowpea seed damage and seed germinability in the laboratory. Results indicated that the oil showed some lethal effects on treated insects at above 50% mortality and very high reduction in oviposition at increased concentrations. Seeds treated with the oil showed significant (P<0.05) reduction in the number of progeny of C. maculatus. There was no observable feeding damage on seeds treated with the highest concentration of the oil applied. In addition, the oil has no adverse effect on seed viability. The present studies indicate that the application of the oil show promise in post-harvest protection of cowpea seeds.
