Insect optic lobe neurons identifiable with monoclonal antibodies to GABA

Abstract: Five monoclonal antibodies against GABA were tested on glutaraldehyde fixed sections of optic lobes of three insect species, blowflies, houseflies and worker bees. The specificity of these antibodies was analyzed in several tests and compared with commercially available anti-GABA antiserum. A very large number of GABA-like immunoreactive neurons innervate all the neuropil regions of these optic lobes. Immunoreactive processes are found in different layers of the neuropils. The immunoreactive neurons are amacri… Show more

“…With the antibody used in the present study, i.e. mAb 3A12, selective staining patterns had also been obtained in rats , insects (Meyer et al, 1986), and adult pigeons (Domenici et al, 1988). As shown by the present study, mAb 3A12 was able to reveal GABAir neurons in glutaraldehydefixed pigeon brains during posthatching development.…”

“…In the adult fly, we observed widespread, punctate labeling for dVGAT throughout the adult central brain and optic lobes (Fig.5), consistent with previous reports using GABAergic markers in Drosophila and other insects (Brotz and Borst, 1996;Brotz et al, 2001;Enell et al, 2007;Harrison et al, 1996;Meyer et al, 1986;Sinakevitch et al, 2003;Sinakevitch and Strausfeld, 2004;Strausfeld et al, 1995). Labeled structures in the central brain include the subesophageal ganglion (Fig.5A,B, SOG), antennal lobe (Fig.5A, Al) and both the ellipsoid body ( Fig.…”

“…These studies have mapped the distribution of enkephalin-like and substance P-like peptides (Mantillas et al,198 1); GABA (Datum et al, 1986;Meyer et al, 1986;Homberg et al, 1987), serotonin (Beltz and Kravitz, 1983;Elofsson, 1983;Nassel et al, 1985), the peptide proctolin (Siwicki and Bishop, 1986), dopamine (Vieillemaringe et al, 1984), choline acetyltransferase (Buchner et al, 1986;Gorczyca and Hall, 1987), and a crustacean peptide hormone (Schueler et al, 1986).…”
