“…Predictions of the ability of MaSp repeat segments that have poly-Ala replaced with poly-Val or poly-Ile to form transmembrane helices confirm that they indeed will not pass through the translocon but will be inserted into the ER membrane ( Figure 3 ). Other possible reasons for why spiders do not use poly-Ile or poly-Val are that these residues, in contrast to Ala, are essential, 58 and that the lower aqueous solubility of poly-Val and poly-Ile compared to poly-Ala, even if they are short enough to pass through the translocon, may cause problems during the production and storage of spidroins.…”

“…Recombinant proteins expressed intracellularly in prokaryotes will avoid the requirement of passing through a lipid membrane, and importantly, Ile and Val are not essential amino acid residues for bacteria. 58 , 59 Water solubility is a prerequisite for successful biomimetic spinning, and thus, the lower solubility of poly-Val and poly-Ile compared to poly-Ala may cause problems in future attempts to produce them in prokaryotic hosts. For the generation of artificial silk fibers using spinning methods based on organic solvents, the water solubility of the produced spidroins may be less important.…”

“…When considering minerals, those considered essential are calcium, chlorine, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, sulphur and zinc [ 77 ]. Based on the mineral profile of meat co-products, it can be stated that all these minerals are present in diverse amounts.…”

“…Finally, some lipids are regarded as essential in insects’ diet, for example, cholesterol, linoleic acid and linolenic acid [ 77 ]. Some of the offal feasible to be used in substrate formulations are a source of both linoleic and linolenic acids; for instance, liver and kidney have been reported to have 0.04–0.05 and 0.01–0.10 g of linolenic acid per 100 g, while linoleic acid was found to be 0.15–0.19 and 0.15–0.47 g/100 g relative to the kidney and liver, respectively.…”
